The objective of this article is to analyze the barriers faced by small and medium enterprises (SMEs) when implementing initiatives for sustainable development. For this purpose, a search equation was designed, and the 50 highest cited articles from the search results in Scopus between years 2013 and 2017 were reviewed. The selected criteria for the article analysis were article name, article year, country, continent, journal, Scimago Journal Rank, Scimago Quartiles, Affiliated Universities, abstract, and keywords. Among the main results, 175 barriers to sustainability for SMEs were identified. The barriers that appeared most frequently were lack of resources, the high initial capital cost of implementing sustainability measures, and lack of expertise. At the end of the article, a proposal is included which shows the 175 identified barriers, classified by “sector,” “sustainability tool,” and “internal/external” which can aid in new qualitative and quantitative studies of barriers to sustainability in SMEs.

In this article, we focused on studying the current barriers to implementing innovations in order for the agricultural sector to become more sustainable. Through a systematic literature review (SLR), 73 scientific articles were obtained with a search equation in SCOPUS. Of these, 48 were analyzed because of the mention of an obstacle preventing the sector from implementing innovations towards sustainability. Information related to the publication year, abstract, authors, keywords, innovation, innovation type, relationship with Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR), identified barrier, nature of the barrier (internal/external), agricultural subsector, country, and methodology of each article was identified, and with VantagePoint software, a technological surveillance technique was applied as a quantitative analysis of the information. The United States is the country with the most publications related to the subject. The most mentioned keywords were “Sustainable Agriculture”, “Agroecology”, “Climate Change”, “Innovation”, and “Organic Farming”. Additionally, a qualitative analysis showed 43 types of innovations, 16 of them related to technology. “Organic Agriculture” is the most mentioned innovation, followed by “Genetic Engineering” and “Precision Agriculture”. In addition, 51 barriers were identified, 28 external to farmers and 23 internal. “Lack of policies that promote that innovation Innovative Practices” is the most mentioned barrier, followed by “Epistemic Closure”, “Unfavorable Regulation”, Climate-Smart Agriculture, and “Unskilled Labor”. This article is intended not only to show trends in the barriers to innovation that prevents the achievement of sustainability that the agricultural sector needs, but also to serve as an input for the development of policies that provide solutions to these impediments. It was shown that 17 out of the 28 external barriers are related to topics that could be solved by formulating policies, laws, incentives, guidelines, and regulations.
In agribusiness, drying is a unitary operation that optimizes the production and preservation of products and raw materials. Drying is performed through different traditional methods, one of the most recently studied is the electrohydrodynamic drying EHD which uses an electric field that allows decreasing the processing time thus increasing the drying speed of raw materials and consuming less energy. In this article, a review was carried out through Scopus using a search equation with the keywords “Electrohydrodynamic drying,” “food” and “AGRI” which resulted in a total of 145 articles; which were analyzed through in-depth reading, analyzing aspects such as year, author, keywords, countries, quartile, journal, relationship with agroindustry, mathematical models used and applications in agro-industrial products, this analysis was complemented with the application of Vantage Point software through co-occurrence matrices and cluster analysis. Recent applications were found in Carrot, Chicken, Sea Cucumber, Goji Berry, Peppermint Leaf, Quince, Potato, Blueberry, Aquatic Products, Banana Slices, Grape Pomace, Blueberry, Apple, Mushroom, Wheat, and Mushroom Slices, mathematical models with application in EHD drying were also found, such as Henderson and Pabis, Page, Logarithmic, Quadratic, Newton/Lewis, Diffusion and exponential.
In recent years, the need for changes in the current consumption and development patterns has become evident. To achieve this, it is necessary to innovate, create, and devise new methodologies and ways of thinking that allow for a reorientation towards economically prosperous, socially equitable, and environmentally reasonable practices. The purpose of this study is to identify sustainability variables within the framework of the innovation system concept, and to propose a methodology for diagnosing regions and identifying their gaps in a sustainability-oriented innovation system. The methodology was based on a literature review of different documents, where sustainability variables related to innovation were extracted from this search, consisting of the identification of concepts made by different authors regarding what should be considered an innovation system aligned with sustainable development. These concepts were identified as study variables and a questionnaire was formulated based on them, which was reviewed by experts to determine their relevance and congruence. After obtaining the final questionnaire, which was subsequently referenced as the diagnostic tool, it was applied in a Colombian study region consisting of the states of Quindío and Risaralda, with sustainability stakeholders. As a result, a great lack of knowledge on the subject on the part of the respondents, low accessibility to sources of information, and a high percentage of disarticulation between policies were found, which led to the conclusion that the evaluated region has a low understanding of sustainability. Based on the information discussed in this research, it can be concluded that there are currently no specific methodologies to measure the sustainability of a region or territory. Therefore, the tool is determined to be a guide for the measurement of sustainability in the context of innovation in any region. Finally, from the studies reviewed, the potential to include sustainability in the innovation systems of a region was detected, enabling economic development, the production of goods and services, and strengthening the socio-environmental considerations involved in the adequate use of natural resources and the increase in the quality of life.
