Este trabalho apresenta a análise antracológica de uma área funerária do sítio Jabuticabeira-II, a qual é comparada aos resultados da análise da camada de cobertura do mesmo perfil realizada por Scheel-Ybert (2001). Todo o sedimento foi coletado de acordo com as feições arqueológicas. A identificação dos fragmentos foi feita em microscópio de luz refletida a partir da estrutura anatômica da madeira. Foram evidenciadas diferenças significativas entre a camada de cobertura e a área funerária e apresentados dados que sugerem a ocorrência de seleção de alguns elementos relacionados ao ritual funerário.
Rio de Janeiro, Niterói, Duque de Caxias, São Gonçalo e Magé, cidades situadas na baía de Guanabara, se desenvolveram em território antes ocupado pelos sambaquieiros. Durante o processo de urbanização, muitos sítios arqueológicos foram destruídos, e algumas pequenas porções estão cobertas por calçamentos de ruas e sob construções das cidades. Com o objetivo de investigar o sistema de assentamento, foram sistematizadas as informações sobre o nordeste da Baía, que ainda contem agrupamentos de sambaquis, alguns deles compostos por sítios em bom estado de conservação, e elaborada uma projeção para o entorno da Baía, com o objetivo de delinear suas principais características, traçar um panorama da ocupação sambaquieira no entorno da Baía e estabelecer correlações com outras regiões litorâneas.
Nuevas intervenciones en el sitio de Amourins combinadas con el nuevo análisis de materiales y estudios de perfil proporcionaron elementos para la reinterpretación de la función del sambaqui. Al principio de su ocupación el sitio era octalizado en una zona inundable y la acumulación de conchas de marisco formaban una superficie seca, una plataforma. Consideramos que las ostras y las lucinas fueron seleccionadas y utilizadas principalmente como materia prima para la construcción de una plataforma por razones prácticas y simbólicas y que no fueron consumidas. La construcción de este sambaqui, al igual que otros grandes sitios del sur de Brasil, se asoció directamente con rituales funerarios, con fuerte evidencia de la realización de fiestas.
