SUMMARY The items in the Denver Developmental Screening Test used in the first year of life have been standardised on a random sample of 668 infants in Cardiff. Differences were found between the ages at which the Cardiff and Denver populations achieved the items. Cardiff infants being in general slightly more advanced on language and personal‐social items and slower on motor items. The implications of these findings are discussed. Standardisation on older age‐groups is continuing.
. (1971). Archives of Disease in Childhood, 46, 819. Assessment of effects of neonatal hypoglycaemia. 41 infants who had experienced neonatal hypoglycaemia (blood glucose less than 20 mg/100 ml) were reviewed at a mean age of 51 months and compared to a group of matched controls. Symptomatic and asymptomatic infants were represented in the hypoglycaemic group in a similar ratio to that found during a previous study of the incidence of hypoglycaemia in a special care unit.Evidence of cerebral damage was found in 6 of the children who had been hypoglycaemic (14 6%) and in 5 of the controls (12 2%). This difference is not significant. The mean IQ and locomotor scores of the two groups were identical, and there was no difference in the incidence of behaviour disorders or convulsions. It is concluded that, while it is important to identify and treat cases of 'true' symptomatic hypoglycaemia, the large majority of infants tolerate low blood glucose levels without sequelae. The prognosis for infants with asymptomatic hypoglycaemia is particularly good, none of the 12 infants in this series showing any evidence of cerebral damage.

SUMMARY The items in the Denver Developmental Screening Test (DDST) have been re‐standardised on a random sample of 1547 Cardiff children aged up to six years. Some differences were found between the ages at which the Cardiff and Denver children achieved certain test items. Cardiff children were consistently slightly slower on gross motor items throughout the age‐range, with the exception of three items, but were slightly more advanced on early language items below the age of 18 months and on some personal and social items. The implications of the findings for the use of the DDST in Britain are discussed.
Summary: Fifty-two surviving low-birth-weight infants who had low Thrombotest (Owren) results on the first day, together with the same number of matched controls with higher Thrombotest results, were examined for the integrity of their central nervous system. Gross abnormalities were found in 13.5% of the low Thrombotest group compared with 1.9% in the higher group.
