Introduction workplace violence is a global problem in the health sector, especially in the hospitals affecting healthcare works´ job satisfaction and performance. Workplace violence (WPV) is present in different forms associated with various factors and the nurses are the most affected. This study aimed to explore WPV among nurses working at a selected University Teaching Hospital in Rwanda. Methods the research approach used was the quantitative descriptive cross-sectional design. The stratified random sampling was used to recruit 195 participants among 379 nurses. The data were collected using a structured, validated, and self-administered questionnaire that was adapted from the International Labor Organization, International Council of nurses, the World Health Organization, and Public Services International. Descriptive statistics were used for analyzing frequencies and percentages. The Chi-square test was used for evaluating the association between variables. Results the findings revealed that (58.5%, n=114) of nurses have experienced some types of WPV in the twelve months preceding the study, among them (44.6%, n=108) of nurses were verbally abused. The nurses providing emergency care, the nurses working in the emergency department, and nurses working with vulnerable patients like HIV/AIDS patients were associated with WPV Chi-square (1, n=195), P=<0.001). The psychological problems have been found to be the first consequences of WPV. Conclusion based on the study findings, it was concluded that the hospital management needs to be aware of WPV, develop and implement appropriate policies and strategies. These will strengthen nurses´ concentration towards them and will result in service delivery improvement.
Hazards resulting from climate change jeopardize human in one way or another. Annually countless deaths, physical injuries, and the collapse of houses, among other consequences, are reported as negative effects associated to climate change events. There is no doubt that these effects are followed by mental health problems which requires the continuation of care after the emergency situation. This paper aimed at highlighting how climate change hazards in Rwanda might be followed by unidentified mental health illness, and proposed a model for proper management. The authors reviewed different literatures to inform their views about the issue and appreciate the efforts being done by the Government to manage immediate mental health problems resulting from climate change hazards for the victims. The authors suggested the need for the continuation of mental health care services after an emergency and that these services be provided by Community Health Workers who live day to day with victims. This will benefit not only the victims but also other people who might be having mental health issues within the community. The Authors recommend further research to document the impact of climate change on mental health and magnitude of the problem in Rwanda.
With few investigations of intra-family end-of-life conflict, this study sought to identify its incidence, cause, and impacts. A questionnaire was completed by 102 hospice/palliative nurses, physicians, and other care providers in Alberta, a Canadian province. Participants reported on how often they had observed intra-family conflict when someone in the family was dying, and the impacts of that conflict. 12 survey participants were then interviewed about the intra-family conflict that they had encountered, with interviews focused on why conflict occurred and what the impacts (if any) were. Nearly 80% of families were thought to experience end-of-life conflict, periodically or continuously, among various family members. The interviews confirmed three reasons for intra-family end-of-life conflict and three conflict outcomes that were revealed in a recent literature review. The findings indicate routine assessments for intra-family end-of-life conflict are advisable. Attention should be paid to preventing or mitigating this conflict for the good of all.
In 2020–2021, a qualitative study was undertaken using an interpretive description methodology to identify what triggers grief in the first 2 years following the death of a beloved family member, and to gain other helpful insights about grief triggers from bereaved Canadian adult volunteers. In that study, a purposive sampling method was used to select 10 bereaved Canadian adult volunteers for in-depth, semi-structured interviews. This paper reports on the humor findings, as revealed to be a particularly complex grief trigger for many participants, as well as a periodic way for most to manage or live with their grief. Participant quotes and an extended discussion are included to illustrate the importance of these humor findings in relation to grief, and to inform bereaved people, bereavement service providers, and the general public about both helpful aspects and some cautionary considerations about humor.
