Throughout the years, scholars have determined that foreign language learning is associated with negative emotional reactions rooted from communication apprehension, test anxiety, and fear of negative evaluation; a phenomenon more widely known as Foreign Language Anxiety (FLA), which has effectively hindered language learning for many students. Moreover, it does not help that the abrupt and drastic pedagogical transformations brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic in itself has proven to be stressful and anxiety-provoking for the learners. In this context, the aim of this study was to determine the foreign language anxiety experienced by Filipino learners in the remote learning setup. This mixed method study gathered data from 83 Filipino college students about their FLA experience across the four macro skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking amidst remote learning. Results revealed the participants experienced the highest level of anxiety with speaking. However, it must be noted that the fear of making mistakes and fear of negative evaluation can be observed across all the four macro-skills. Participants also struggle with opportunities to improve across the four macro skills due to the intermittent internet connection, inadequate resources, and limited interaction with their teachers and peers.
In this era of emerging technologies, the application of the new trends has been accepted and applied in the fields of medication, education, sports, and infrastructure. Along with current innovations comes the birth of Augmented Reality (AR), a new technology that imposes 3D images and visuals into the real world. This study aims to automate and augment the process of locating campus buildings and offices by providing information as well navigation by scanning the infrastructures' image trackers using the process of augmentation. The application will elevate the in-campus experience of the students and visitors by providing an entertaining and efficient way of navigating through augmentation. To assess the user acceptability of the application, survey questionnaires were distributed through Google forms. As for the respondents, 450 students and 50 faculty personnel were considered as the sample size. Results reveal that users believe that the application will be able to provide helpful information on the location of buildings and offices for the visitors. Moreover, results showed that the application received a high acceptability rating and in fact is needed by the users.
The alarming decline in the English language proficiency of Filipinos in recent years calls for further exploration into the challenges encountered by learners across the four macro-skills, particularly in writing, being the macro-skill met with the most challenge alongside speaking. Hence, this study aimed to identify the common writing errors of college students from the Marinduque State College in writing recount text and attempt to determine the reasons behind these writing deficiencies. Twenty (20) recount texts written by third-year Social Work for their World Literature course were subjected to analysis. The results revealed that punctuation use, selection of correct verbs and prepositions, capitalization, subject-verb agreement, and selection of appropriate pronouns were the areas in writing that the participants were most challenged with. These composition errors may be attributed to a lack of focus on grammatical rules in L2 learning and the strong influence of the native language. Hence, intervention on these identified writing deficiencies must be implemented immediately in order for the learners’ communicative writing skills to be at par with global standards for English communicative competency.
