Quality learning can be interpreted as learning that achieves learning goals through an effective, efficient, interesting and fun learning process. Low-quality learning is unpleasant learning so that the learning objectives are not optimally achieved. Math anxiety impacts students as early as the first grade by affecting their working memory. Working memory is like a ‘mental scratchpad’. This study is qualitative research that aims to determine the level of decreasing of mathematics anxiety (MA) in students’ perspective at Elementary School level in Bukittinggi after they have learned with STEM-Based Learning. The subject of this study is 58 elementary school students. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method. The data collected by observation and using a MA Scale. The results showed that after applying STEM-Based Learning, the most decreased in students mathematical anxiety were anxiety about mathematical tests and anxiety about numerical calculations.
This article was based on the results of classroom action research of STEM approach in investigating pumpkins at first grade of SDN 02 Aur Kuning Kota Bukittinggi. The students learn to know deeply about pumpkins that easily found in their sorrounding by investigating and combining science, mathematic, enggineering, drawing, and art in their learning process. The subject of this project was the first grader of 02 Aur Kuning elementary school students in Kota Bukittinggi. The methode used classroom action research methode in two cycles with two meeting per each cylce. Indikator of critical thinking that used in this study were basic operations of reasoning and metacognitive knowledge. The results of this research showed that by applying STEM approach in investigating pumpkin improved the learning outcome and students creative thinking in learning science and mathematic at elementary school in Bukittinggi.
Education in the age of the industrial revolution 4.0 requires teachers to become innovative; teachers need to be able to adapt science and technology innovations to learning trends in the classroom. Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) approach is an alternative learning approach that allows students to have the complete skills desired by 21st century learning. Utilizing the STEM approach in a learning environment allows several topics to be effectively learned in a grade II elementary classroom. One STEM approach used ‘Potatoes in My Head’, has learners learn about food ingredients, using measuring instruments, as well as basic techniques of engineering. This paper is the result of best practices carried out by the teacher in the second semester of the 2018/2019 academic year and involved 29 second grade students at a public elementary school in Bukittinggi, Indonesia. The aim is to see the improvement of students’ learning outcomes and critical thinking skills. The knowledge was gathered through observation strategies and assessments of learning outcomes. The findings showed that the STEM approach in the Potatoes in My Head operation helped enhance learning outcomes and the students’ critical thinking skills.
