Embalagem é todo recipiente que armazena produtos por um tempo determinado, utilizada para agrupar o produto em unidades menores ou desejáveis, visando melhor qualidade no transporte, manipulação e armazenamento, diminuindo prejuízos. É considerada de fundamental importância, principalmente para os alimentos, pois tem como função proteger, informar e armazenar (BRASIL, 2001). As embalagens flexíveis são confeccionadas com materiais básicos maleáveis, como o papel, celofane, filmes plásticos, nylon, finas folhas de alumínio ou com combinações de dois ou mais desses materiais, formando estruturas mais complexas que podem atender as necessidades do produto a ser embalado. Sua utilização abrange as indústrias: alimentícias, farmacêuticas, de cosméticos, de fertilizantes, entre muitas outras (COLANERI; GARCIA, 2007). O estudo de suas propriedades mecânicas possibilita criar uma alternativa no processo de extensão de vida útil do produto, uma vez que determinados produtos envasados se deterioram mais facilmente que outros, sob as mesmas condições de armazenamento (CRIPPA, 2006). A mistura de dois ou mais materiais na embalagem apresentam propriedades mecânicas e físicas superiores às de cada componente individual. Podem-se desenvolver combinações de materiais com propriedades distintas que atendam cada caso, definindo a quantidade quase exata de cada material, evitando o excesso de embalagem e garantindo a proteção do alimento (CRUZ, 2013).
