The study assessed the relationship between teachers’ workload and their effectiveness in secondary schools. A descriptive survey design was adopted for this study to determine the frequency of occurrences of the phenomenon and discover whether or not there is a relationship that exists between the variables. The target population of this study comprised Headteachers, Deputy Headteachers, Directors of Studies, and class teachers in the selected Secondary Schools in Sheema Municipality, Sheema Municipality. The study employed a questionnaire and interviews. The study used Pearson correlation to determine the level of statistical relationship between workload and teachers’ effectiveness. Results indicate that there is a weak but significant positive correlation between teachers’ workload and their effectiveness in secondary schools (r=0.012, p<0.045). It was found that teachers are always prepared when holding classes. It was concluded that teachers in secondary schools of Sheema Municipality are given other responsibilities apart from teaching. These include; duty supervision, monitoring, some co-curricular activities like drama, football guidance, and counselling. It was also concluded that teachers in secondary schools of Sheema Municipality are effective in terms of students’ improvement in discipline and good performance registered in terms of academics. It was also concluded that more workload for teachers affects their effectiveness negatively, that is, failure to prepare schemes of work, and lesson plans, assess learners, maintain discipline, and participate in co-curricular activities. The study recommends that the government should set more innovative guidelines for teacher workload in schools to enable school administrators not to overload the teachers, which may result in ineffectiveness.
The study was about motivation and retention of workers in faith-based organisations: a case study of child development centre projects of Ankole Diocese. It was guided by the following objectives; to establish the influence of promotion on employee retention in faith-based organizations of Ankole Diocese Child Development Centre Projects, to examine the influence of Salary increment on employee retention in faith-based organizations of Ankole Diocese Child Development Centre Projects in reducing employee turnover and to establish the effect of recognition on employee retention in faith-based organizations in Ankole Diocese Child Development Centre Projects. A cross-section design was adopted for this study to determine the frequency of occurrences of the phenomenon and discover whether or not if there is a relationship that exists between the variables. The target population of this study comprised Child development officers, Project directors, Project overseers, Partnership facilitators, LDP graduates, and Centre guides of Ankole Diocese. The study employed questionnaire and interviewing. The study findings revealed that there is a positive strong relationship between promotions on employee retention; there is a positive strong relationship between salary increment influences employee retention; a positive relationship between recognition and employee retention in faith-based organisations. Therefore; the study recommended that employee promotion does play a very significant role in retaining employees at work places; the human resource management department should carry out its career management policy and make relevant changes so as to take into considerations the many factors that individuals may require at the Ankole Diocese Child Development Centre Project. Finally; there should be good management in faith-based organizations with the human resource department so as to ensure that the working conditions specifically in line with working hours, cleanliness of environment and work instruments are put in place
Background: Diabetes and hypertension are among the leading contributors to global mortality and require life-long medical care. However, many patients cannot access quality healthcare due to high out-of-pocket expenditures, thus health insurance would help provide relief. This paper examines factors associated with utilisation of health insurance by patients with diabetes or hypertension at two urban hospitals in Mbarara, southwestern Uganda. Methods: We used a cross-sectional survey design to collect data from patients with diabetes or hypertension attending two hospitals located in Mbarara. Logistic regression models were used to examine associations between demographic factors, socio-economic factors and awareness of scheme existence and health insurance utilisation. Results: We enrolled 370 participants, 235 (63.5%) females and 135 (36.5%) males, with diabetes or hypertension. Patients who were not members of a microfinance scheme were 76% less likely to enrol in a health insurance scheme (OR = 0.34, 95% CI: 0.15 – 0.78, p = 0.011). Patients diagnosed with diabetes/hypertension 5 – 9 years ago were more likely to enrol in a health insurance scheme (OR = 2.99, 95% CI: 1.14 – 7.87, p = 0.026) compared to those diagnosed 0 – 4 years ago. Patients who were not aware of the existing schemes in their areas were 99% less likely to take up health insurance (OR = 0.01, 95% CI: 0.0 – 0.02, p < 0.001) compared to those who knew about health insurance schemes operating in the study area. Majority of respondents expressed willingness to join the proposed national health insurance scheme although concerns were raised about high premiums and misuse of funds which may negatively impact decisions to enrol. Conclusion: Belonging to a microfinance scheme positively influences enrolment by patients with diabetes or hypertension in a health insurance program. Although a small proportion is currently enrolled in health insurance, the vast majority expressed willingness to enrol in the proposed national health insurance scheme. Microfinance schemes could be used as an entry point for health insurance programs for patients in these settings. The study assessed the relationship between management of the USE program and establishment of private secondary schools. The study employed a cross sectional design by which data was collected basing on what is going on at the particular point of time. The study population included MEO, parents, inspectors, head teachers and teachers. A sample size of 344 respondents participated in the study, quantitative data was analyzed using descriptive statistics formulae provided by the statistical packages for social science SPSS v.16. Also the independent variable was correlated with dependent variable using Pearson correlation. The statistical package for social scientists (SPSS 22.0) were used in the analysing of data. The study found out that there is a high positive significant relationship between management of the USE program and establishment of private secondary schools in Ibanda Municipality at P=0.002 at level of significance 0.01, r = 0.878. It was further concluded that there is a high positive significant relationship between management of the USE program and the establishment of private secondary schools in Ibanda Municipality. Management of the use program is responsible for the establishment of private secondary schools in Ibanda Municipality. It was recommended that the government should conduct effective supervision of universal secondary schools to improve the effectiveness of USE program. The government should set the limit of fees for students in private schools to enable all parents who have children in private schools afford the fees.
