We describe Titanotaria orangensis (gen. et. sp. nov.), a new species of walrus (odobenid) from the upper Miocene Oso Member of the Capistrano Formation of Orange County, California. This species is important because: (1) It is one of the best-known and latest-surviving tuskless walruses; (2) It raises the number of reported odobenid taxa from the Oso Member to four species making it one of the richest walrus assemblages known (along with the basal Purisima of Northern California); (3) It is just the second record of a tuskless walrus from the same unit as a tusked taxon. Our phylogenetic analysis places T. orangensis as sister to a clade that includes Imagotaria downsi, Pontolis magnus, Dusignathus spp., Gomphotaria pugnax, and Odobeninae. We propose new branch-based phylogenetic definitions for Odobenidae, Odobeninae, and a new node-based name (Neodobenia) for the clade that includes Dusignathus spp., G. pugnax, and Odobeninae. A richness analysis at the 0.1 Ma level that incorporates stratigraphic uncertainty and ghost lineages demonstrates maximum peaks of richness (up to eight or nine coeval lineages) near the base of Odobenidae, Neodobenia, and Odobenini. A more conservative minimum curve demonstrates that standing richness may have been much lower than the maximum lineage richness estimates that are biased by stratigraphic uncertainty. Overall the odobenid fossil record is uneven, with large time slices of the record missing on either side of the Pacific Ocean at some times and biases from the preserved depositional environments at other times. We recognize a provisional timescale for the transition of East Pacific odobenid assemblages that include “basal odobenids” (stem neodobenians) from the Empire and older formations (>7 Ma), to a mixture of basal odobenids and neodobenians from the Capistrano and basal Purisima (7–5 Ma), and then just neodobenians from all younger units (<5 Ma). The large amount of undescribed material will add new taxa and range extensions for existing taxa, which will likely change some of the patterns we describe.
Development of Thyrinteina arnobia Stoll (Lepidoptera: Geometridae) on leaves of Eucalyptus urophylla and Psidium guajava ABSTRACT -The development of Thyrinteina arnobia Stoll (Lepidoptera: Geometridae) caterpillars fed either on Eucalyptus urophylla or Psidium guajava (Myrtaceae) leaves was studied in laboratory. The first instar was the most critical for survival of this insect in both diets. Shortest larval period (27 days) was obtained for males on guava leaves, with the longest one for caterpillars which originated females or males with E. urophylla leaves (37 days). No insects feeding on guava leaves which originated males reached six instar while the sexual ratio with this diet was 0.6. With E. urophylla leaves, 58.3% of males presented six instars with a sexual ratio of 0.3. The width of head capsules of the caterpillars, for both sexes, was significantly different in both diets, being bigger for those fed with guava leaves, with rates of 4.3; 6.2; 10.0 and 13.0%, from the second to the fifth instar, respectively. This rate reached 28.0% in the sixth instar, corresponding to an increase of 113.0% in relation to the previous instar, indicating that individuals fed on guava leaves are stronger and more vigorous than those fed on E. urophylla. Largest width of the head capsule was associated to high viability and short duration of the larval period for individuals fed on guava leaves what suggests that this diet is more suitable for rearing this insect. T. arnobia is a native pest of guava and probably it is not adapted to feed on Eucalyptus yet.
ABSTRACT. BIOLOGY OF FULGURODES SARTlNARIA GUENÉE (LEPI-DOPTERA, GEOMETRJDAE) ON PINUS PATULA. This paper relates to the first case of Pinus patula defoliation by Fulgurodes sa rtinaria Guenée, 1857 (Lepidoptera: Geomctridae) in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Fie ld and laboratory studies showed that F. sa rtinllrill is a voraceus species with high biotic potential. Avarage egg laying by female was 180.82 wilh 22.34±7.36% and 12.91 ± 0.11 days of egg viability and incubation period, respeclively. Larval period passed through five instars with a mean of 78.56 ± 1.91 days. Pre-pupal and pupal stages had a mean period of 3.3±0.24 and 20.70±2.05 days, respectively. Males and females were very similar in appearance, with 12.88±0.92 and 12.00±1.65 days of adult live, respectivelly. It were found an identified egg parasite and Brachym erill sp. pupal parasite.
-Considering the importance of predatory Pentatomidae as biological control agents it is necessary to optimize mass production facilities of these species. The objective of this research was to evaluate the influence of body weight on survival and reproductive parameters of females of Podisus rostralis (Stål) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae). Treatments were represented by females of this predator with the following mean weight: 39.5 mg, 45.5 mg, 51.5 mg, 57.5 mg and 63.5 mg. Heavier females of P. rostralis showed shorter preoviposition period while the number of eggs and of nymphs per day presented a positive linear relationship with female weight of this predator. Longevity of females of P. rostralis was similar between treatments with no tendency of variations as a function of body weight of these females. Since the objective of mass rearing facilities of predatory bugs is to produce the maximum possible number of nymphs per day it is recommended to use females of P. rostralis with weight above 60.0 mg.Index terms: biological control, mass rearing, reproductive performance, survival.
