Objetivo: Conocer las características de los artículos publicados en la Revista Médica Herediana. Material y métodos: Se llevó a cabo un estudio descriptivo y retrospectivo sobre los 26 números entre los años 1990 y 1996. Resultados: Se tuvo 28 editoriales (11.5%), 122 trabajos originales (50.2%), 45 revisiones de temas (18.5%), 36 reportes de casos (14.8%), 7 notas históricas (2.9%) y 5 cartas al editor (2.1%). Los trabajos originales fueron 111 de medicina clínica (90.9%), 7 de salud pública (5.8%) y 4 de ciencias básicas (3.3%); la mayoría correspondió a Infectología, Nefrología y Neumología. Se tuvo un promedio de 3.71 autores por trabajo; 206 autores (73.3%) publicaron solo un trabajo; y, 363 (79.6%) fueron profesores de la Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia. Los trabajos originales fueron prospectivos 57 (46.7%) y retrospectivos 65 (53.3%); y las referencias bibliográficas fueron extranjeras, 2 898 (87.1%) y nacionales, 431 (12.9%). Todos los reportes de casos correspondieron a medicina clínica (Infectología, Cirugía y Neurología). Las revisiones de temas de medicina clínica fueron 34 (75.6%), principalmente Infectología, Nefrología, Patología y Cirugía). Conclusión: Se concluye que los artículos publicados en la Revista Médica Herediana tienen las características de aquellos publicados en las revistas biomédicas de los países en vías de desarrollo.
