El salivazo Clastoptera achatina es un hemíptero que disminuye calidad y producción de nuez al alimentarse de la savia y al cubrir los estigmas con sus excreciones. La presente investigación tuvo como objetivo determinar la fluctuación poblacional, distribución en la copa del árbol y el efecto de cinco insecticidas sobre salivazo. Los resultados muestran tres picos poblacionales, el más abundante fue durante el verano en el municipio de La Cruz con 56% de brotes infestados entre los 2 y 4 m de altura en los cuadrantes Este y Norte del árbol. Los insecticidas sulfoxaflor (3.6 y 7.2 g de i. a. 100 L−1 de agua) y clorpirifos (72 g de i. a. 100 L−1 agua) presentaron un control del 100% a las 72 y 24 h respectivamente hasta 7 días después de la aplicación. Los resultados contribuyen al desarrollo de estrategias para el control de salivazo en nogal pecanero.
La roya es la enfermedad del café de mayor importancia económica, puede ocasionar pérdidas de producción superiores a 50%. La información sobre prácticas de control biológico aplicado para controlar la roya del café en Costa Rica es limitada. El estudio tuvo por objetivo seleccionar una cepa local de <em>Simplicillium</em> con alto grado de virulencia, así como evaluar la eficiencia de cepas comerciales de micoparásitos destinados al control de <em>H. vastatrix</em> en Costa Rica. El estudio comprendió ocho cepas de hongos, cinco de ellas fueron aisladas de la zona cafetalera de Turrialba e identificadas como <em>Simplicillium</em> <em>lanosoniveum</em> y tres biofungicidas comerciales recomendados para combatir la roya en cafetales de Costa Rica. La cepa EC mostró ser la más efectiva al colonizar en menor tiempo las pústulas de roya. Esta cepa fue comparada con formulados comerciales después de dos pases sucesivos en PDA y de haberla almacenado en papel filtro. Los aislamientos locales presentaron un mayor grado de especificidad que el resto de las cepas. Estos son los primeros resultados que anteponen a <em>Simplicillium</em> como principal agente de control biológico de <em>H. vastatrix</em> en Costa Rica.
