El resultado de la Guerra de Sucesión de España (1702-1714) cambió el equilibrio entre las grandes potencias beligerantes. Francia perdió su hegemonía en favor de las potencias marítimas, España perdió buena parte de sus posesiones europeas, y los austríacos consolidaron su poder dentro del Imperio y en sus fronteras otomanas. Sin embargo, la historiografía contemporánea ha indagado poco sobre qué sucedió en otros territorios más pequeños como fue el caso del Electorado de Baviera. Este artículo pretende analizar cuáles fueron los motivos que propiciaron el apoyo bávaro a la causa borbónica, qué motivaciones políticas y rivalidades dentro del Reich acrecentaron su división, cómo se gestó el Tratado de Versalles de 1701, porqué este se fue ampliando y, por último, cuáles fueron las consecuencias políticas y sociales de la derrota franco-bávara en Blenheim en 1704 y de la posterior ocupación militar del electorado.
Dada su proximidad geográfica con el Reino de Valencia y el Principado de Cataluña, las zonas fronterizas del Reino de Aragón se constituyeron en un escenario bélico clave para que los dos bandos enfrentados en la Guerra de Sucesión de España pudieran consolidarse territorialmente. A pesar de los avances historiográficos realizados hasta la fecha, todavía hoy quedan incógnitas relacionadas con las dinámicas bélicas y los efectos sociales, políticos, demográficos y urbanísticos que sufrieron los territorios de la Corona de Aragón. El presente estudio tiene como objetivo analizar cuáles fueron los mecanismos que entre 1705 y 1710 los ejércitos de Felipe V utilizaron para controlar las zonas orientales del Reino de Aragón y cómo se organizaron para dominar la población, evitar sublevaciones y obtener recursos económicos a partir de las nuevas cargas fiscales. Asimismo, se analizará cómo evolucionaron las estrategias represivas aplicadas y cuáles fueron las consecuencias que estas tácticas tuvieron para la población, los municipios y el devenir del conflicto.
La Guerra de Sucesión de España dejó una profunda huella en múltiples localidades peninsulares y en la población civil. Los objetivos del presente trabajo son estudiar las razones políticas y militares que propiciaron la masacre de la Villa de Areny de 1707 por parte de las tropas de Carlos III poco después de su derrota en Almansa, y comprender mejor las dinámicas bélicas de principios del siglo XVIII y los resultados obtenidos por los gobernantes y sus ejércitos con estos actos represivos. Las fuentes documentales utilizadas proceden de archivos del Archivo Privado de Casa La Torreta de Areny, la Biblioteca Nacional de Catalunya, el Archivo de la Corona de Aragón, el Archivo Histórico Nacional y el Archivo Histórico de la Nobleza. Los hallazgos confirman la masacre en Areny y la sitúan en un contexto bélico represivo en unos territorios de dominio cambiante.
A raíz de la guerra de Sucesión de la Monarquía Hispánica, los territorios de la Corona de Aragón fueron ocupados militarmente y, jurídicamente, perdieron sus constituciones y fueros. En 1707, el contexto militar salido tras Almansa se volvió favorable a los intereses de Felipe V. En las operaciones posteriores, Xàtiva y Lleida fueron arrasadas y remodeladas por parte de los ejércitos felipistas para adaptarlas a las nuevas necesidades militares y sociopolíticas, lo que generó una nueva realidad que facilitó el sometimiento de los naturales de esos reinos «rebeldes» A partir de las fuentes archivísticas procedentes de España y Francia, complementadas por memorias de los coetáneos y documentación británica, en este trabajo vamos a analizar los mecanismos de dominación social y control político efectuados en las poblaciones de Lleida y Xàtiva después de sus conquistas en 1707. Ahondaremos en la comprensión de los mecanismos represivos y castigo que favorecieron la consolidación de Felipe V en el trono y obtener el control de las zonas hostiles, además de constatar el impacto que tuvieron sus directrices para el devenir de ambas urbes. Complementaremos el análisis mediante una comparación internacional de diferentes casos paradigmáticos del período para enmarcarlos dentro de unos fenómenos represivos de alcance internacional. En su conjunto, esto nos permitirá obtener una visión más precisa sobre las estrategias de control que, mediante la construcción de grandes fortalezas y unas guarniciones militares permanentes, intentaron eliminar cualquier atisbo de disidencia social y abrieron la puerta a un proceso de asimilación sociopolítico.
