O aleitamento materno é um dos grandes e importantes acontecimentos nos primeiros meses de vida do bebê. A Organização Mundial de Saúde recomenda que o aleitamento materno (AM) seja feito de maneira exclusiva até o sexto mês de vida do bebê. Posteriormente a essa idade, deve ser feita a introdução alimentar (IA) de maneira correta, de forma gradual e lenta em conjunto com o aleitamento materno, preferencialmente, até os dois anos de idade. Sendo que a IA pode ser realizada de diferentes formas, como: a tradicional, a participativa e o Baby Led Weaning (BLW). O objetivo deste trabalho foi buscar informações sobre a introdução alimentar, analisando a relação do aleitamento materno e de doenças e alergias com a introdução alimentar errônea e precoce nas crianças e demonstrando a importância do aleitamento materno exclusivo até o sexto mês de vida. Trata-se de um estudo de revisão bibliográfica utilizando artigos científicos e livros sobre a temática nas línguas portuguesas, por meio de dados realizados nos centros especializados: Scielo, Lilacs, Pubmed, entre 2009 e 2022. O AM exclusivo até os seis meses de idade, e a IA é de extrema importância para que a criança tenha um crescimento adequado, evitando surgimento de doenças e alergias alimentares, obesidade infantil e até mesmo na fase adulta, além disso, há estudos relacionando a amamentação ao desenvolvimento da inteligência da criança.
