This work aims to analyze the effect of the thickness of the specimen and the distance of the cold wire to the welded piece on the geometry and dilution of welded beads deposited through the mechanized coldwire GTAW process (MCW GTAW) for applications in anticorrosive coatings. During welding the average current was 170.00 A and the average voltage ranged from 21.60 to 25.60 volts as a function of the variation of the wire distance to the welded piece (WDP). By time, 4 values were used for WDP: 3.50, 5.50, 7.50 and 9.50 mm. The cold wire feed rate was 3.20 m/min, while the torch displacement velocity was 8.22 cm/min for all welds performed. Carbon steels with thicknesses of 6.35 and 12.7 mm were used as substrate. E317L stainless steel with a diameter of 1.20 mm was used as addition metal. The main results indicated that the increase in WDP promoted an increase in the width of the welded beads and a reduction in both the height and the dilution for the two substrates used. Additionally, for the same welding parameters, the welding applied in the thicker substrate (12.7mm) presented lower height, width and dilution when compared to those applied to the substrate with lower thickness (6.35mm). The variation of geometry and dilution of the weld beads, for the same substrate, can be justified by the different types of metallic transfers caused by the WDP variation.
