This investigation assessed the relation of understanding and similarity of spouses to marital satisfaction by use of the MMPI. The satisfactorily married couples predicted significantly more of their spouses' responses than did the unsatisfactorily married couples. This significantly greater accuracy of prediction was not enhanced by the significantly greater similarity exhibited by the satisfactorily married couples. In fact, both groups accurately predicted a significantly greater number of items that were dissimilarly endorsed when compared with those items similarly endorsed. No relation was found for either group between assumed similarity and marital satisfaction.
Butcher, Kendall, and Hoffman raise concerns regarding the Newmark, Ziff, Finch, and Kendall data on Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory short forms. The major areas of contention include -remarkably similar mean scores, exceptionally high correlation coefficients, a restricted range of difference scores, and a high percentage of identical scores. Comparison with other short form studies shows that concern with regard to three of the four issues is not justified. Butcher, Kendall, and Hoffman (1980) challenge the credibility of our MMPI short form data (Newmark, Ziff, Finch, & Kendall, 1978) based on a comparison of our study with three of their own investigations (Clavelle & Butcher, 1977; Edinger, Kendall, Hooke, & Began, 1976;Koss & Butcher, 1973). Note that only the Edinger et al. study dealt primarily with and published short form data. We demonstrate that comparisons with other investigations result both in several unsubstantiated concerns and in markedly less discrepancy than Butcher et al. note.Butcher et al. emphasize their futile efforts to obtain the data sheets from one of the present authors (C.S.N.), but fail to note my informing them that all such materials were sent to Finch and Kendall for statistical analyses. According to Finch, as per usual procedure, the data were punched on cards and then discarded. However, these cards were readily made available to Butcher et al. If I (C.S.N.) did not want Butcher et al. to obtain these data cards, I could have requested that Finch either return them or not comply with their request.Several relevant issues were addressed in Butcher et al. 's (1980) comment. First, there
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
