The paper presents the definition and development of an architecture oriented to the flexible and fast provisioning of services in a B-ISDN testbed. After analyzing some alternatives, it is described how the flexibility target is reached by a distributed architecture based on specialized processing units (Attached Processors: AP) that can be added to the basic ATM switch. Attached Processors act as "coprocessors" of the switching system control and may include special signal processing functions within the user plane. The paper describes the testbed architecture, then the switching software platform and specific issues related to the ATM switch-AP interconnection are addressed, referring to protocol aspects for both control and user planes. In order to verify the effectiveness of the AP approach by means of a real experimentation, an audioconference service has been implemented.
