Computer science as a school subject in France is characterized by a succession of promising starts that have not yet been transformed into perennial solutions. The main goal of this article is to analyze this complex situation from a historical perspective, and describe the current rebirth of an optional Computer Science course in the last year of secondary education, together with other initiatives that might contribute to introducing Computer Science as a school subject. We also aim at discussing some perspectives for the future to support a better informatics education for all students. The sources we have used are mainly historical and administrative, however we have also drawn on empirical research and surveys conducted since the seventies. This article therefore takes both retrospective and perspective viewpoints.
MOTS CLÉS : enfants, adolescents, informatique, école ABSTRACT : Youngsters, sometimes considered as « digital natives », are heavy and seemingly talented ICT users. But to what extent and how do they acquire the technical competencies and general knowledge necessary to use it sensibly and efficiently? This paper, which draws on a report made for the CERI OECD about « new millennium learners », aims at presenting a meta-analysis of this question. Its main conclusions are that if the technical infrastructure is now commonplace, youngsters, who also are targets for marketing enterprises, are not so ICT competent as many observers pretend. Furthermore, if que blogs, forums, messagerie instantanée...).
Twenty years have elapsed since ICT has been introduced on a large scale in French primary schools. Since then many developments have occurred, many of them outside of the technical sphere (for example decentralization has much progressed), new issues have appeared. This paper briefly analyzes changes and trends in the field of ICT in French primary education. It suggests that the development of ICT, still uncomplete, does not seem to have brought much change in the system. However, new ideas and activities have emerged, that deserve further research and invite to international comparisons. First contextual elements about France and the situation of primary education are recalled. Then issues linked with the development of ICT are analysed, taking into account the situation of both pupils and teachers.
