The prevalence of depression is quite high between elderly people living in Greek islands and Cyprus. Urban environment that may also interact with sedentarism and unhealthy dietary habits seems to promote depression in the studied population. Efforts to lower the prevalence of depression in the elderly should target on the aforementioned factors that employ functional impairment, social environment and dietary habits.

Objectives. This work aims at exploring the association between fish intake and depressive symptoms, in older adults. Method. During 2005-2007, 1,190 men and women (>65 years) free living in various Greek islands and in Cyprus participated in the study. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the validated Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS), and foods intake through a Food Frequency Questionnaire. Results. Objective: To investigate whether the socio-economic status (SES) of elderly eastern Mediterranean islanders is associated with their dietary habits, particularly with adherence to the traditional Mediterranean diet. Design: Cross-sectional. Setting: Adherence to the Mediterranean diet was measured by the MedDietScore (range: 0-55), whereas SES was estimated using education and financial status. Subjects: During 2005-2007, 300 men and women from Cyprus, 100 from Samothraki, 142 from Mitilini, 114 from Kefalonia, 131 from Crete, 150 from Lemnos, 150 from Corfu and 103 from Zakynthos (aged 65-100 years), free of known chronic diseases, participated in the survey. Results: Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that belonging to the highest SES was associated with a higher MedDietScore (P , 0?01), after adjusting for potential sociodemographic, lifestyle, dietary and clinical confounders. A significant positive association was also found between MedDietScore and years of school (P 5 0?004), as well as financial status (P 5 0?001). Conclusions: Older Greek people of higher SES seem to follow a relatively healthier diet. Both education and income seem to play a role in this issue. Thus, public health policy makers should focus on people with low SES in order to improve their quality of diet and, consequently, their health status.

The level of adherence to the traditional Mediterranean diet was moderate. People living in rural areas seem to better hold these traditional dietary habits.

We investigated whether the type of left ventricular (LV) geometry is associated with left atrial (LA) size as determined either by LA diameter or by volume, indexed for body surface area, in essential hypertensives. A total of 339 consecutive, untreated, hypertensives (aged 51.8 years, 234 males) underwent 24-h ambulatory blood pressure (BP) monitoring and estimation of LA diameter and volume, as well as LV structure and function by echocardiography. LV hypertrophy was present in 130 (38.3%) patients whereas normal geometry (LV-NG), concentric remodeling (LV-CR), concentric hypertrophy (LV-CH) and eccentric hypertrophy (LV-EH) represented 34.5, 27.1, 25.7 and 12.7%, respectively. Patients with either LV-CH or LV-EH had increased LA diameter index compared with those with either LV-NG (by 1.1 mm m -2 , Po0.01 and 1.4 mm m -2 , P ¼ 0.003, respectively) or LV-CR (by 1.3 mm m -2 , P ¼ 0.003 and 1.6 mm m -2 , P ¼ 0.001, respectively). Similarly, patients with either LV-CH or LV-EH had significantly increased LA volume index compared with those with either LV-NG (by 3.2 ml m -2 , Po0.001 and 3.4 ml m -2 , Po0.005, respectively) or LV-CR (by 4.5 and 4.7 ml m -2 , respectively, Po0.001 for both). Multiple linear regression analysis showed that the independent predictors of both LA volume and diameter index were LV mass index, 24-h pulse pressure and E/Em.LA size assessed either by its diameter or by volume is closely related only to LV mass index and not to any specific LV geometric pattern in the early stages of essential hypertension.

Body composition changes seem to be associated with lower quality of life in the older adults, as measured through successful ageing.
