Sediment supply rate and accommodation regime represent primary controls on the depositional architecture of basin margin successions, but their interaction is commonly inferred from 2D dip profiles and/or with limited constraints on sedimentary facies. In this study, three parallel (>40 km long) 2D depositional oblique‐dip profiles from outcrops of the lower Waterford Formation (Karoo Basin, South Africa) have been correlated. This data set provides a rare opportunity to assess the lateral variability in the sedimentary process record of the shelf‐to‐slope transition for eight successive clinothems over a 900 km2 area. The three profiles show similar shelf‐edge rollover trajectories, but this belies significant along‐margin variability in sedimentary processes and down‐dip sediment supply. The depositional architecture of three successive clinothems (WfC 3, 4 and 5) also show along‐shelf physiographic differences. The reconstructed shelf‐edge rollover position is not straight, and a westward curve to the north coincides with an area of greater sand supply to the slope beyond a shelf dominated by wave and storm processes. All the clinothems thicken northwards, indicating an along‐margin long‐term increase in accommodation that was maintained through multiple shoreline transits across the shelf. The origin of the differential subsidence cannot be discriminated confidently between tectonic or compaction processes. The interplay of basin margin physiography, differential subsidence rate and process regime resulted in significant across‐strike variability in the style and timing of sediment dispersal patterns beyond the shelf‐edge rollover. This study highlights the challenge for accurate prediction of the sediment partitioning across the shelf‐edge rollover in subsurface studies.

Two stacked parasequences exposed continuously along a 35-km dip section in the Permian lower Waterford Formation, Karoo Basin, South Africa, form basin marginscale clinothems, and their internal facies distributions have been mapped out from shelf to upper submarine-slope settings. Sedimentary facies changes have been determined by walking out key surfaces between measured sections. The two parasequences (Waterford clinothems WfC 3 and WfC 4) share progradational profi les, but WfC 3 is characterized by a strong fl uvial infl uence, whereas overlying WfC 4 is a wave-stormdominated delta front system. When correlated basinward, the two clinothems exhibit stratigraphic thickening as well as differing process responses to the increased gradient at the shelf-edge rollover. WfC 3 exhibits synsedimentary, wedge-shaped rotational growth faults. These growth faults trapped sand at the shelf-edge rollover, so minimal sand was delivered to the upper slope; therefore, the clinothem downlaps into the slope mudstones within 7 km of the shelf-edge rollover. In contrast, the top of WfC 4 is marked by closely spaced gullies cut into deformed delta front deposits. The delta front deposits pass into sand-prone slope turbidites 3 km downdip. Locally, these turbidites are truncated by a 60-m-thick turbidite-sandstonefi lled slope channel fi ll. In this case, most of the slope delivery is associated with a wavedominated process regime. It is important to consider the sequence stratigraphic setting of clinothems in such analyses; WfC 4 represents a minimum accommodation point in a depositional sequence and is overlain by a Type 2 sequence boundary. Despite wave and storm dominance, the low accommodation and high sediment supply at that time is interpreted to have driven sand beyond the gullied shelf-edge rollover. Therefore, the delivery of sediment to deep-water settings is governed by parameters other than the presence and proximity of a fl uvial point source, which is heavily advocated in current models for shelf construction.

Extensional rift basin systems have been a focus of study for hydrocarbon exploration and have provided significant economic reserves in recent decades, which has led to advances in our understanding of their tectono-sedimentary evolution. However, with the increasing maturity of such settings, focus is shifting from pre-rift structures to the underexplored syn- and late-rift plays. This change in focus brings with it a significant increase in complexity when trying to develop an integrated understanding of the sedimentological, sequence stratigraphic and structural conditions that control the distribution of syn-rift reservoirs. Here we present a subsurface example from offshore Norway of a small, confined, syn-tectonic basin sourced from a local basement high. 3D seismic data, sedimentary facies analysis and stratigraphic correlations based on well and core data from six key wells constrain the local and regional tectonic controls. The PL586 licence partners drilled several wells between 2014 and 2015 targeting syn-rift Upper Jurassic stratigraphy on the southern Halten Terrace. The wells penetrated a complete syn-rift stratigraphic sequence, which provided an excellent subsurface record of the inherent complexities encountered in small, confined (3 by 5 km) syn-rift basins. Seismic data reveals that the Late Jurassic hanging-wall basin architecture and the footwall hinterland of the Frøya High were controlled by activity on the basin-bounding Vingleia Fault Complex. Facies analysis from well and core data reflects a complete syn-rift succession. The early-rift succession comprises mainly mud and siltstone with minor fine-grained sandstones interpreted to be deposited by sediment gravity flows in isolated mini-basins. The peak-rift deposits comprise coarse-grained sediment gravity flows that were sourced locally from the uplifting footwall and deposited as coarse-grained submarine fan systems in the immediate hanging wall. Significant footwall uplift during the peak-rift phase resulted in fault scarp instability and the emplacement of several large landslide complexes into the basin. The late-rift phase is dominated by a mud-rich sequence with minor coarse-grained apron fans shedding sediment off the basin bounding fault and shoreface deposits flanking the hanging-wall dip-slope and subtle intra-basinal highs. This subsurface study from the southern Halten Terrace is significant in the number of wells that have specifically targeted syn-rift stratigraphy and the level of detail at which it captures the stratigraphic variability of these deposits within a small, confined basin system. Integration of seismic geomorphology and well data with robust provenance, dating and stratigraphic correlation has enabled the development of a tectono-stratigraphic model specific to the scale and local tectonic setting. The model reveals that structural evolution ultimately controlled the development of sediment supply routes, their age and distribution, and allows several conclusions to be drawn: The stratigraphy of small, confined syn-rift basins is broadly comparable with more typically documented larger syn-rift settings, although lateral facies changes occur more rapidly.The cannibalistic nature of syn-rift systems, where a large volume of pre- and syn-rift sediments are uplifted and eroded then rapidly re-deposited makes determining the relative age of laterally variable depositional settings difficult.In order to adequately constrain the timing and depositional extent of syn-rift stratigraphy, it is essential to understand the structural evolution of the system and integrate this information with other disciplines and datasets. This integrated understanding will ultimately improve predictions of reservoir presence and quality.

Exhumed basin margin‐scale clinothems provide important archives for understanding process interactions and reconstructing the physiography of sedimentary basins. However, studies of coeval shelf through slope to basin‐floor deposits are rarely documented, mainly due to outcrop or subsurface dataset limitations. Unit G from the Laingsburg depocentre (Karoo Basin, South Africa) is a rare example of a complete basin margin scale clinothem (>60 km long, 200 m‐high), with >10 km of depositional strike control, which allows a quasi‐3D study of a preserved shelf‐slope‐basin floor transition over a ca. 1,200 km2 area. Sand‐prone, wave‐influenced topset deposits close to the shelf‐edge rollover zone can be physically mapped down dip for ca. 10 km as they thicken and transition into heterolithic foreset/slope deposits. These deposits progressively fine and thin over tens of km farther down dip into sand‐starved bottomset/basin‐floor deposits. Only a few km along strike, the coeval foreset/slope deposits are bypass‐dominated with incisional features interpreted as minor slope conduits/gullies. The margin here is steeper, more channelized and records a stepped profile with evidence of sand‐filled intraslope topography, a preserved base‐of‐slope transition zone and sand‐rich bottomset/basin‐floor deposits. Unit G is interpreted as part of a composite depositional sequence that records a change in basin margin style from an underlying incised slope with large sand‐rich basin‐floor fans to an overlying accretion‐dominated shelf with limited sand supply to the slope and basin floor. The change in margin style is accompanied with decreased clinoform height/slope and increased shelf width. This is interpreted to reflect a transition in subsidence style from regional sag, driven by dynamic topography/inherited basement configuration, to early foreland basin flexural loading. Results of this study caution against reconstructing basin margin successions from partial datasets without accounting for temporal and spatial physiographic changes, with potential implications on predictive basin evolution models.
