Boo\ Reviews 389 correctly points out, on the export of profits-that one can appreciate adequately all the deformations of the Chilean economy, yesterday and today. The question we can ask ourselves at this point is why the Chilean economy was, and continues to be, a deformed economic process? The author's answer is that the Chilean economy was not in a position to capitalize the revenue obtained from die exploitation of non-renewable resources-nitrate and copper-and to redirect it into productive investment and in the production of capital goods, in consumption and in services. The author argues, in short, that the extraction of mining products, non-renewable resources par excellence, is a factor which did not favour capital accumulation so long as its revenue was not channelled towards other productive sectors. This review necessarily simplifies the author's thesis, but is intended to show concretely how his book can help us to explore new problems as well as those hitJierto traditionally analysed which relate to economic growth in an underdeveloped Latin American economy.
