ZusammenfassungSeit einigen Jahren sieht sich der Sozialkonstruktivismus einer Reihe grundsätzlicher Vorbehalte und Einwände ausgesetzt. Aus Sicht der Kritiker erweist sich die Auffassung einer ‚gesellschaftlichen Wirklichkeitskonstruktion’ als eine wenig attraktive Spielart des Antirealismus, die zwar sozialen Dingen ein Existenzrecht zugesteht, dies jedoch um den Preis, nicht-sozialen Entitäten eine eigenständige Realität abzusprechen. Der vorliegende Beitrag unternimmt den Versuch, diese Kritik zurückzuweisen. Am Beispiel der Soziologie wissenschaftlichen Wissens wird argumentiert, dass der Sozialkonstruktivismus ein empirisches Forschungsprogramm verfolgt, das der Frage nachgeht, welche Wirklichkeitsdeutungen soziale Verbindlichkeit erlangen. Derart ausbuchstabiert handelt es sich bei der sozialkonstruktivistischen Wissenschaftssoziologie, wie im Anschluss an Überlegungen des Neopragmatismus und der analytischen Sprachphilosophie gezeigt wird, um eine theoretische Position, die sowohl Distanz zu den Prämissen des Realismus als auch des Antirealismus wahrt (auch wenn viele ihrer Vertreter explizit für eine der beiden Seiten optiert haben).
