Araneae are widely distributed in all types of environment. The group usually served as pest controllers in most agrosystem habitat. Yet, they are poorly known in the Philippines. This paper aimed to provide information on the diversity and distribution of Araneae in three habitat types: roadside, nearby stream, and mixed dipterocarp area within the ecological site using time constraint and transect walk sampling. Data revealed 5 families namely Araneidae, Clubionidae, Sparassidae, Salticidae and Tetragnathidae. The habitat nearby stream had the most number of species (22). Most of them are Araneidae (12), Clubionidae (1), Salticidae (6), Sparassidae (1) and Tetragnathidae (2). While the roadside area had only Araneidae (7) and Tetragnathidae (7) and in the mixed dipterocarp had three families: Tetragnathidae (2), Sparassidae (1) and Araneidae (3). Species richness based on Shannon Weiner Diversity Index, showed highest at the nearby stream (H'=1.085), followed by the roadside (H'=1.048) and lowest at the dipterocarp forest (H'=0.436). The distribution of Araneae species at CEDAR Impasugong, Bukidnon is uneven. The nearby stream had dominated by Araneidae because members are associated shrub and herbs plants along the stream with their webs hang on the flyways of most insects. The roadside and dipterocarp were dominated with tall mahogany (Swietenia mahogani) and lauan (Shorea contorta) were the habitat for the Sparassidae and Araneidae. Results suggest that Araneae favors the stream as their microhabitat in CEDAR, Bukidnon.
-Mindanao is considered one of the richest islands in the Philippines, due to high avifaunal biodiversity. Birds play a vital role in determining the condition of certain areas. The study is a morphological assessment of birds in Malagos watershed, Baguio District, Davao City. It sought to identify and classify the birds species; determine the distribution and compare the taxonomic listing of birds with previous avian surveys in the area. Using point count and mist netting effort, 54 species were identified belonging to 27 families. Three (3) new families were added to the list of previous studies. It included twelve Philippine endemic species, seven Mindanao endemic species, 32 resident species and four species of birds assessed as vulnerable and endangered. The area was also
Birds are important indicators to determine the quality of habitat. They played an important role in maintaining the balance of our ecosystem. This study aims to determine the species of birds and its diversity within the Central Mindanao University main campus. A line transect method combined with bird watching technique were used within the two month avian survey. A total of 27 species belonging to 21 families were recorded namely, Accipitridae, Alcedinidae, Apodidae, Ardeidae, Artamidae, Bucesotidae, Campephagidae, Columbidae, Corvidae, Dicaeidae, Estrildidae, Hirundiniidae, Laniidae, Meropidae, Nectariniidae, Phasianidae, Pycnonotidae, Sturnidae and Sylviidae. Out of the 27 bird species observed, 18 resident, 3 resident-migrant, 5 Philippine endemic and 1 island endemic. The most observed species are Euarasian Tree Sparrow (Passer montanus) and followed by an introduced species which was Feral Pigeon (Columba livia). Most of the species observed were commonly found in urban communities, agroecosystem and along the forest edge. Some species of birds belonging to family Nictariniidae and Dicaeidae are associated in areas with flowering trees and there are seldom observed in other points. The average diversity of all points H'= 0.94 which is quiet low and it requires more sampling effort and other technique to record silent or shy species.
