Effects of pressure and composition on the gap properties of AlxGa1−xAs randomly disordered alloys are investigated theoretically and experimentally. The analogy between pressure and alloying effects is explored. Special attention is given to the direct-to-indirect gap transition region, where the gap sensitivity to both pressure and composition variations is shown to be strongly enhanced. A 30% decrease in luminescence intensity is produced on a x=0.46 sample under applied pressure of 0.7 kbar, while a similar effect in GaAs would require pressures of several tens of kbar. Calculations are performed within the small crystal approach using 64-, 216-, and 1000-atoms basic cluster sizes, with periodic boundary conditions. Convergence of the calculated properties with the cluster size is discussed.
BackgroundDyslipidemias induce angiogenesis and accelerate the development and in vitro growth of breast tumors. The aim of this study was to assess the lipid and metabolic profile of female dogs with mammary carcinomas and their correlations with body condition score and degree of tumor malignancy, as well as to study the effect of dietary fish oil supplementation on these animals.ResultsOverweight or obese dogs had more aggressive carcinomas and higher triglyceride (p = 0.0363), VLDL (p = 0.0181), albumin (p = 0.0188), globulin (p = 0.0145) and lactate (p = 0.0255) concentrations. There was no change in the lipid profile after supplementation with fish oil at any concentration. However, in relation to the metabolic profile, glucose (p = 0.0067), total protein (p = 0.0002) and globulin (p = 0.0002) concentrations were increased when 90% omega-3 fish oil was used as a dietary supplement.ConclusionObese dogs showed altered lipid and metabolic profiles and more aggressive tumors, suggesting an important relationship between dyslipidemia and tumor aggressiveness. Supplementation with fish oil, rich in omega-3 fatty acids, may alter metabolic parameters in cancer patients.
The need for environmental protection has demanded the searching nontoxic catalysts easily handled and discarded. This work deals with the use of aluminum as a substitute of chromium, in iron-and copper-based catalysts for the high temperature shift reaction. Catalysts were prepared in the commercial form (hematite) and was evaluated in more severe operational conditions than the usual industrial one (e.g. steam to carbon ratios, R, lower than 0.6). It was found that aluminum can replace chromium in these catalysts leading to better catalytic properties as compared to chromium. The catalyst has the advantage of being non toxic and can work in low amounts of steam.
Recebido em 28/7/00; aceito em 22/8/01 THE EFFECT OF TEMPERATURE ON THE CATALYTIC PERFORMANCE OF IRON OXIDE WITH COPPER AND ALUMINUM. Aluminum and copper doped hematite was evaluated in the high temperature shift (HTS) reaction at several temperatures in order to find catalysts that can work in different operational conditions. It was found that the catalysts work in kinetic regime in the range of 300-400 o C. Both copper and aluminum increases the activity and selectivity. Aluminum acts as textural promoter whereas copper acts as structural one. The most promising catalyst is that with both copper and aluminum which showed higher activity and selectivity than a commercial sample. This catalyst has the advantages of being non toxic and can work at low temperatures. Keywords: hydrogen production; iron oxides; CO conversion.
ABSTRACTLaNi 1-x Cu x O 3 (x = 0.0, 0.3 and 0.5) type solids with perovskite structure were studied in this work aiming to develop catalysts for the production of high pure hydrogen in the internal reforming of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC). It was observed that the experimental conditions used for preparing the samples favored the quantitative incorporation of cations in the precursor and the formation of solids with perovskite structure. These materials showed different reducing properties and the copper presence favored the stability of the perovskite structure. The catalytic properties of the samples were evaluated in water gas shift reaction (WGSR), an important step for purifying hydrogen in the process of hydrocarbons reforming. The results showed that the catalysts are promising for the reaction, showing much higher activities than a iron oxidebased commercial catalyst containing chromium and copper; This was assigned to the tendency of the samples in favoring the adsorptive mechanism, probably due to a high mobility of oxygen in the crystalline lattice. The highest value of catalytic activity was shown by the LaNi 0.5 Cu 0.5 O 3 sample, the catalyst with the best performance.
