The intake and in vivo digestibility of Trypsacumlaxum in guinea pigs according to the graded level of spirulina was evaluated in Cameroon. 20 animals aged of 6 months with an average weight of 450 ± 50 g were randomly divided into 4 equivalent groups. Each group received T. laxum and 40g of compound feed containing 0% (TS0), 2% (TS2), 4% (TS4), and 6% (TS6) of spirulina. Feed intake was the different between the left over and the quantity served. The sample of T. laxum and those of each diet as well as feces were collected and analyzed for the apparent digestibility of each nutrient. Animals were weighed at the beginning and at the end of each period of the test to determine the body weight gain. This study showed that the average daily intake of dry matter (DM) for TS0, TS2, TS4 and TS6 was 74.39 ± 2.98, 78.66 ± 3.14, 83.89 ± 4.28 and 77.76 ± 4.40 g/head/day. The highest apparent digestibility coefficients of different nutrients were obtained with animals fed TS6 group while the lowest were observed in TS0.The apparent digestibility coefficient of dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM) and crude protein (CP) of the supplemented group were statistically higher than those of the control diet. Animals’ weight performances were statistically comparable between treatments. Thus, the combination of T. laxum with concentrated feed containing spirulina can be recommended for guinea-pigs, but the level of incorporation may not exceed 4% of its daily ration.
The use of phytobiotics in feeding monogastric herbivores has several interests, including the stabilization of the caecal flora and especially the improvement of the growth of animals thanks to a better exploitation of feed resources. Thus a trial was conducted with an objective to evaluate the feed intake and post weaning growth performances of cavy according to the inclusion level of ginger meal. A total of 40 guinea pigs of 3 weeks of age were divided into 4 lots, and subjected to rations consisting of Trypsacum laxum served ad libitum, associated with the compound feed containing 0; 0.5; 0.75 and 1% ginger powder (T0, T1, T2 and T3). This study showed that the total intake of DM, MO and CB from forage was comparable between rations T0, T1 and T2 and significantly higher than those of ration T3. At weaning, average animal weights of all rations were comparable. However, at 8 weeks of age, the T0, T1 and T3 rations yielded comparable average weights, but significantly higher than those of the T2 animals, i.e., 272 g; 298.80 g; 285.25 g and 221.83 g, respectively. The T0, T1 and T3 diets recorded total gains that were comparable but significantly higher than those obtained with animals in Lot T2. Ginger powder can be included up to 0.75% in the diet as a feed additive for improved ingestion and 0.5% for post-weaning growth.
The diversification of animal protein sources is a beneficial strategy to fill the protein deficit that all developing countries like Cameroon are facing. This work was initiated with the aim of increasing the productivity of guinea pigs through the use of avocado seed extracts. Four experimental rations (T0, T1, T2 and T3) were formulated with graded level of avocado seed extracts (0; 100 g; 200 g and 300 g of extracts per 100 kg of food respectively). Each treatment was tested on 15 females and 3 males divided into 3 subgroups. The results reveal that the mean weights of the animals were significantly the highest: at farrowing (87.00 g); at weaning (160.80 g) and at 8 weeks of age (234.40 g) were obtained with the T1 treatment. The significantly highest total gains (147.4 g) were obtained with the T1 treatment, the T3 treatment having given the lowest mean gain. In animals receiving T0 and T1 treatments, the level of lactobacilli was higher than the level of E. coli. The reverse was observed with T2 and T3 treatments. The use of avocado seed extracts can be considered at an incorporation rate of 100 g / 100 kg in guinea pigs feed.
