Seismic amplification consist of a modification of the seismic signal when it travels from rock to soil strata. This causes variations in the amplitude and the frequency content of the signal when it reaches the surface. This effect tends to cause a variation in the intensity with a possible increase in damage to infrastructure. To evaluate the degree of seismical signal amplification hazard a combination of the following maps is used: -Surface geology -Earthquake generating sources -Peaks of registered intensities -Natural period of the soil -Maximum possible peak acceleration, velocity and displacementThe map presented allows the calculation of high, medium and low relative hazard in conjunction with other ingineering parameters. Finally, the hazard map is compared with the urban development map, where a coincidence between the areas of larger residential growth and the areas with higher level of hazard of seismic amplification is observed.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
