The knowledge of activity patterns exhibited by crustaceans can be utilized in several ways. In commercial species this knowledge can be used directly to increase the efficiency of the fishery and in the advent of commercial culture, growth could possibly be controlled by altering locomotor patterns by regulation of light and dark periods (Fielder, 1965). In this instance the need for recording locomotor patterns became apparent when the senior author began a comparative study of the behaviour of portunid crabs found in Moreton Bay.
