Nasal obstruction due to deviated nasal septum is a common problem encountered by otolaryngologists. A variety of surgical procedures have been tried in the treatment of the same. This study was conducted to evaluate the outcomes and complications of endoscopic and conventional septoplasty. This is a prospective, randomized study. Fifty patients with symptomatic deviated nasal septum were included in the study, 25 of them underwent conventional septoplasty and the rest underwent endoscopic septoplasty. The difference in the functional outcome of both the surgeries was insignificant. There was a significant difference with respect to complications. Endoscopic septoplasty had better outcome with respect to complications. It is easier to correct posterior deviations and isolated spurs with endoscopic septoplasty. Complications are lesser with endoscopic septoplasty.
Extramedullary plasmacytomas are uncommon tumors, with a worldwide annual incidence of 3 per 100,000 population. They accountfor 1% ofall tumors ofthe head and neck and 4% ofall nonepithelial tumors ofthe nasal tract. A variety of treatment options has been suggested. These treatments VQl Y according to the site ofpresentation, the presence of locoregional spread, and the histologic picture. Radiotherapy has been widely used as a treatment modality, but little has been written about surgery as a single management modality. However, such an option assumes importance in a developing nation, where patient follow-up is errati c and treatment costs must be kept low. We discuss the feasibility of surgery in such a circumstance, and we describe our surgical treatment of a case of extramedullary plasmacytoma in an elderly woman who presented to our hosp ital in India.
Teratomas are rare conge nital neoplasms that arisefrom pluripotent cells. They cons ist of tissue from all three embryonic germ layers. According to most studies, teratomas of the head and neck account for only 2 to 9 % of all cases. In this article, we report the first case of a teratoma of the nasal vestibule in a newborn. We also dis cuss methods of diagnosis and treatmeilt of upper airway teratomas, and we include a brief review of the literature.
Meticulous surgical technique can ensure high success rates with the use of conventional cold steel instruments, without the use of adjunctive procedures, making endonasal dacryocystorhinostomy a cost-effective, reliable procedure.
Tympanoplasty has been the mainstay of treatment in chronic otitis media. In a non cholesteatomatous chronic otitis media, there has been much debate whether a cortical mastoidectomy is required or not. Creating an aerating mastoidectomy in cases of blocked aditus ad antrum helps in reducing the recurrence. However, the status of aditus is not always known unless a mastoidectomy is performed. In this study we try to find out if there is any clinical clue regarding a blocked aditus ad antrum by looking at the tympanic membrane. Fourty-three cases of cortical mastoidectomies were retrospectively studied in this series. Patency of aditus ad antrum was analyzed with respect to presence of myringosclerosis and the status of middle ear mucosa. In this study myringosclerosis was found to be significantly associated with a blocked aditus while no such association was found with the status of middle ear mucosa. The presence of myringosclerosis may indicate a blocked aditus ad antrum and performing a cortical mastoidectomy in such cases may help in creating an aerated mastoid, thereby possibly reducing the recurrence rate.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
