O cotidiano constitui uma importante referência para o trabalho com os conteúdos geográficos. E para discutir seu papel na Geografia Escolar, apresentamos neste texto algumas reflexões acerca do tema riscos ambientais, com destaque para a maneira como os processos erosivos nos solos têm sido abordados na Educação Básica. Mediante pesquisa de cunho qualitativo, realizamos revisão bibliográfica sobre conhecimentos docentes, ensino de Geografia, solos, processos erosivos e riscos e impactos ambientais, entrevistamos professores de Geografia da Rede Municipal de Educação de Goiânia e analisamos materiais pedagógico-didáticos de Geografia. Como resultado verificamos que a abordagem dos riscos associados aos processos erosivos não se configura como um dos temas centrais de análise na prática dos professores e nos materiais didáticos. Quando esse tema é abordado, encontra-se mais próximo à perspectiva dos impactos ambientais. Comumente, as abordagens reforçam um ideário midiático que culpabiliza a sociedade pelos problemas que caracterizam o quadro de degradação ambiental da atualidade, sem inserir nesse quadro a compreensão em torno dos componentes físico-naturais do espaço. Além disso, verifica-se que no ensino dos conteúdos relativos aos processos erosivos utiliza-se como escala de análise, predominantemente, a área rural, dificultando a compreensão dos estudantes acerca desses processos em áreas urbanas, espaço de vivência da maioria deles. Esses aspectos evidenciam a importância de uma sólida formação inicial e continuada dos profissionais na Educação Básica, visando favorecer o trabalho com essa temática e contribuindo, consequentemente, para a formação cidadã dos alunos.
