The new nonlinear optical (NLO) crystal BaGa4S7 for the mid-infrared (IR) has been grown by a Bridgman-Stockbarger technique. Polycrystalline materials with stoichiometric composition were synthesized from BaS, Ga, and S as the initial materials by solid-state reactions. The ultraviolet (UV) and IR transmittance of the crystal was determined with polished crystal pieces. The UV and IR optical absorption edges were found to be at 350 nm and 13.7 μm, respectively. From optical measurements of second harmonic generation on powders, the NLO coefficient d 33 was determined to be 12.6 pm/V. The laser damage threshold of a single crystal reached about 1.2 J/cm2 at 1.064 μm. The Vickers-hardness value of the crystal is 327.5 HV5, which is equivalent to Mohs’ hardness of about 5.

In this article, a new technique is proposed which can handle the singularity problem arising in the MoM solution of the electric field integral equation. The method involves MCI technique in evaluation of the moment matrix elements. One major advantage of the MCI technique is that it removes the singularity problem arising in integration of singular integrand without any analytical modification or approximation to the integrand by only employing the "local correction technique," where the uniformly distributed random points are avoided from falling in the vicinity of the observation points. The technique is applied to the problem of scattering from metallic structures for three different test cases showing the local correction for the singular points in each case. It is evident that this new technique is capable of handling the singularity problem very efficiently and easily. ACKNOWLEDGMENT

A yttrium aluminum borate [YAl(3)(BO(3))(4)] (YAB) crystal with UV cutoff wavelength of 165 nm is used as the nonlinear optical crystal for fourth harmonic generation. The fundamental frequency laser at 1064 nm from an Nd:YVO(4) master oscillator power amplifier laser was frequency doubled to 532 nm. Using the type I phase-matching YAB crystal, a 5.05 W average power 266 nm UV laser was obtained at the pulse repetition frequency of 65 kHz, corresponding to the conversion efficiency of 12.3% from 532 to 266 nm. The experimental results show great potential for the application of using YAB as a nonlinear optical crystal to get high-power fourth harmonic generation.

In this study, analysis of hydrogeological conditions, as well as hydrochemistry and isotopic tools were used to get an insight into the processes controlling mineralization, recharge conditions, and flow pattern of groundwater in a typical arid alluvial-lacustrine plain in Qaidam Basin, northwest China. Analysis of the dissolved constituents reveals that groundwater evolves from fresh water (TDS=300-1000 mg/l) to saline water (TDS≥5000 mg/l) along the flow paths, with the water type transiting from HCO 3 •Cl-Na•Mg to HCO 3 •Cl-Na, and eventually to Cl-Na. Groundwater chemical evolution is mainly controlled by water-rock interaction and the evaporation-crystallization process. Deuterium and oxygen-18 isotopes in groundwater samples indicate that the recharge of groundwater is happened by meteoric water and glacier melt-water in the Kunlun Mountains, and in three different recharge conditions. Groundwater ages, estimated by the radiogenic (3 H and 14 C) isotope data, range from present to Holocene (∼28 ka). Based on groundwater residence time, hydrogeochemical characteristics, field investigation, and geological structure distribution, a conceptual groundwater flow pattern affected by uplift structure is proposed, indicating that shallow phreatic water is blocked by the uplift structure and the flow direction is turned to the northwest, while high pressure artesian water is formed in the confined aquifers at the axis of the uplift structure.

A high power and efficient 588 nm yellow light is demonstrated through intracavity frequency doubling of an acousto-optic Q-switched self-frequency Raman laser. A 30-mm-length double-end diffusion-bonded Nd:YVO(4) crystal was utilized for efficient self-Raman laser operation by reducing the thermal effects and increasing the interaction length for the stimulated Raman scattering. A 15-mm-length LBO with non-critical phase matching (theta = 90 degrees, phi = 0 degrees) cut was adopted for efficient second-harmonic generation. The focus position of incident pump light and both the repetition rate and the duty cycle of the Q-switch have been optimized. At a repetition rate of 110 kHz and a duty cycle of 5%, the average power of 588 nm light is up to 7.93 W while the incident pump power is 26.5 W, corresponding to an overall diode-yellow conversion efficiency of 30% and a slope efficiency of 43%.

A high-power 588 nm light produced by an intracavity frequency-doubling acousto-optic Q-switched self-frequency Raman laser is reported. A 20-mm-long YVO(4)/Nd:YVO(4) composite crystal and a 15-mm-long LiB(3)O(5) (LBO) with noncritical phase-matching (theta=90 degrees , phi=0 degrees ) cut were adopted for efficient self-Raman laser operation and second-harmonic generation, respectively. By the optimizing the focus position of incident pump light and Q-switch repetition rate, yellow light with 5.7 W average power was generated under the pump power of 23.5 W, corresponding to the overall diode-yellow conversion efficiency of 24.2% and slope efficiency of 32%. The pulse width is about 16 ns, and the pulse energy is up to 95 microJ.
