Este estudio se enfoca en el diseño de un aliviadero escalonado de sección variable convergente utilizando el modelamiento numérico tridimensional con el objetivo de encontrar el dimensionamiento hidrodinámico óptimo y una disipación de la carga hidráulica eficiente en aliviaderos escalonados, para lo cual se evaluaron diferentes alternativas a partir de un aliviadero de sección constante y se compararon los parámetros hidráulicos para determinar la operación hidráulica adecuada. Los resultados muestran que la contracción de la sección aguas abajo permite una disipación adicional de energía, lo que es importante para mejorar el rendimiento hidráulico de los aliviaderos escalonados. Los modelos fueron calibrados con el experimento de laboratorio realizado por Arosquipa et al. (2022). Estos hallazgos abren la puerta a futuras investigaciones y mejoras en el diseño de aliviaderos escalonados convergentes, lo que es crucial en la gestión de recursos hídricos en proyectos hidráulicos, especialmente en situaciones críticas previstas debido al cambio climático y sin incurrir en mayores gastos.
