La Formation Calcarénite de Niebla (CTVIS et al., 1987) affleure sur la bordure SW du Bassin du Guadalquivir ; elle est constituée d'un ensemble d'affleurements isolés les uns des autres, situés à différentes altitudes, et s'appuie en discordance sur le socle paléozoïque ou mésozoïque. D'âge Tortonien supérieur, elle fait partie de la séquence B de SIERRO et al. (1990) qui peut être correlée au cycle eustatique 3.2. de HAQ et al. (1987). Paléogéographiquement, elle est située sur la bordure occidentale du détroit nord-bétique qui assurait les communications, avec le détroit sud-rifain, entre le domaine atlantique et le domaine méditerranéen. La sédimentation commence, en général, avec des conglomérats et des graviers, parfois avec des clastes bien arrondis, parmi lesquels se trouvent sporadiquement intercalés des dépôts de "débris flow" ; elle continue avec des sédiments carbonatés (biocalcarénites) pouvant atteindre une puissance de 30 m et se termine par des sables fins avec de la glauconite. Du point de vue biotique, la Formation se caractérise par des bio¬ constructions à corallinacées, des accumulations à Heterostegina, de mollusques tels que les Ostréidés ou Isognomon, et la présence de Clypeaster. Les changements dans l'espace et le temps observés reflètent les différentes conditions d'environnement d'une plateforme carbonatée dans un contexte transgressif, où la montée relative du niveau de la mer ainsi que l'existence de barrières morphologiques (paléoreliefs) conditionnent sa distribution, sa puissance et son contenu.
