Thoth is a real-time operating system which is designed to be portable over a large set of machines. It is currently running on two minicomputers with quite different architectures. Both the system and application programs which use it are written in a high-level language. Because the system is implemented by the same software on different hardware, it has the same interface to user programs. Hence, application programs which use Thoth are highly portable. Thoth encourages structuring programs as networks of communicating processes by providing efficient interprocess communication primitives.
The System 75 Office Communication System is the first field application of the Oryx/Peeos operating system, a message-based system which supports real-time, distributed applications. Its interprocess communications mechanisms provide a structuring tool similar to monitors, capabilities, and abstract data types. This paper describes the principal concepts implemented in the operating system kernel, and presents the essential system processes. Support for application design techniques is discussed and related to proven software engineering principles, including information hiding and modularity. Specific examples are drawn from System 75 for call processing and maintenance.
Wulf and Shaw [1] have suggested that the non-local variable b e abolished from all "higher level" programming languages . Their example s illustrate several deficiencies which result from the scope rules o f Algol-like block structure mechanisms . They characterize the deficiencie s as :
Extended AbstractThoth is a portable real-time operating system which has been developed at the University of Waterloo. Various configurations of Thoth have been running since May 1976; it is currently running on two minicomputers with quite different architectures (Texas Instruments 990 and Data General NOVA).
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
