Can you tell me why, with the exception of the relationship between the violin and the viola, few string players look to a different stringed instrument for mind-expanding ideas? I believe there is much we can learn from each other, and it may surprise other string players that the double bass can be an invaluable source of helpful information, particularly in the areas of bowing and efficiency. Because of the great size of the double bass, many technical problems of string playing are magnified to a level that makes even minute details easier to comprehend. This advantageous factor enables double bassists to transfer their observations to other stringed instruments and zero in on often unnoticed aspects of technique.
