Predicting daily occupancy is extremely important for the revenue management of individual hotels. However, daily occupancy can fluctuate widely and is difficult to forecast accurately based on existing forecasting methods. In this article, ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD)—a novel method—is introduced, and an individual hotel is chosen to test the effectiveness of EEMD in combination with an autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA). Result shows that this novel method, EEMD-ARIMA, can improve forecasting accuracy compared to the popular ARIMA method, especially for short-term forecasting.
The accurate forecasting of tourism demand is complicated by the dynamic tourism marketplace and its intricate causal relationships with economic factors. In order to enhance forecasting accuracy, we present a modified ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD)–autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model, which dissects a time series into three intrinsic model functions (IMFs): high-frequency fluctuation, low-frequency fluctuation, and a trend; these three signals were then modeled using ARIMA methods. We used weekly hotel occupancy data from Charleston, South Carolina, USA as an empirical test case. The results showed that for medium-term forecasting (26 weeks) of hotel occupancy of a tourism destination, the modified EEMD–ARIMA model provides more accurate forecasting results with smaller standard deviations than the EEMD–ARIMA model, but further research is needed for validation.
Ferroelectric van der Waals (vdW) heterostructure have recently emerged as a low-power, versatile device paradigm because it combines the great diversity of the 2D materials and the memory nature of ferroelectrics. The non-volatile field effect generated by the polarization bound charge is the pivotal factor for the device's performance. Unfortunately, microscopic studies on the interplay between polarization switching and electrostatic coupling at the heterojunction remain largely overlooked. Herein, the authors investigate the electrostatic coupling phenomena of vdW heterostructures consisting of semiconducting MoS 2 and ferroelectric CuInP 2 S 6 . Significant charge injection accompanying the polarization reversal appears to be the governing field effect that modulates the electronic and photoluminescent properties of MoS 2 , as revealed by correlated ferroelectric domain, surface potential, and photoluminescence microscopies. Conversely, the photoactivity of the MoS 2 also affects the polarization stability of CuInP 2 S 6 . This work provides direct microscopic insight into the mutual electrostatic interactions in vdW ferroelectric-semiconductor heterojunctions, which has broad implications for ferroelectric field-effect applications.
Maintaining cultural sensitivity has been a challenge in subjective wellbeing (SWB) research involving nonwestern populations, which continues to primarily use a quantitative approach and Westernoriginating measurements. Accounting for culturally specific characteristics of the study area and sample, we employed a concurrent mixed-methods phenomenological approach to uncover factors contributing to urban Chinese residents’ SWB in the context of their daily lives. Data from 65 semi-structured interviews in Shenzhen, China revealed five meta-themes, including harmony in interpersonal relationships, financial wellbeing and homeownership, health, physical and social environment, and intentional activities and mentality. Residents’ background contextual information was cross-referenced with the meta-themes to enrich data interpretation, unveiling the profound imprint of age and life stages, the broad-scale structural inequities associated with China’s household registration system, and the firm grip of traditional family core values and folk wisdom in the form of a transcendental mindset of inner peace and dignity. The results provide a contextualized understanding of the primary sources of SWB relevant to today’s urban Chinese residents, and offer valuable insight about the social-cultural complexities involved in “ordinary” Chinese residents’ pursuit of happiness that is co-shaped by individual effort, deep-rooted traditional values, and consequential social infrastructure and policies amidst the country’s deepening, transformative urbanization. -With the rapidly development of domestic tourism, the online reviews on hotels and tourism service are the most important source for tourists due to the network technology and online communication. Online reviews can have a significant influence on individual travelers as well as an impact on the competitive reality of the tourism sectors as a whole. Therefore, we had analyzed the tourist reviews about three famous economy hotels (i.e.HOME INN, Hanting Express, JINJIANG INN) in Xi'an from Ctrip.com, a major online travel agency in China by the Grounded Theory approach, and attempted to construct online attention dimension of tourists to economy hotels. The results of the analysis, constructed online attention into five major sections: surrounding factors (i.e. convenient transportation, shopping/entertainment, sensory distance), cost performance factors (i.e. room cleanness, price), service factors (i.e. service attitude, front office, breakfast, working efficiency), internal factors (i.e.facilities, internal decoration) and comfortable factors (i.e. cosiness, sweetness (togetherness)). As a result, this article is helpful to make the hotel management understand its advantages, and to make wisdom advise for individual travellers and economy hotels in the future.
