It is very important to know the anatomy of the mandible, localization of the mandibular foramen and anatomical variations in order to prevent nerve damage and other possible complications in sagittal split ramus osteotomy, mandibular trauma procedures, enucleations of benign and malignant lesions, preprosthetic surgery, local anesthesia of the nervous alveolaris inferior. The aim of this review is to reveal the anatomy, embryology of the mandible and the clinical importance of the localization of the mandibular foramen.
