As a particular cultural production, migration literature, increasingly heralded as a new world literature, internationalised literature or world fiction – is a form of transnational writing, concerned mostly with cosmopolitan issues. The universalism of migration literature, however, is based on national or ethnic tradition. Moreover, it is manifested through original life experiences and attitudes that are typical of ethnic expressions of identities. The significant point that this paper emphasises is the fact that William Saroyan is an author who represents a dynamic Armenian-American cultural blend, moving both universal and ethnic literary expressions to new heights. His works demonstrate clearly both his universality and his adherence to national heritage – his ethnic and family identities are employed in his distinct western settings and tones.
In its most basic sense, communication – the transmission and reception of information between the addresser and addressee, the generation of certain meaning, and the powerful source of information in the society – is a social multidimensional semiotic system which today, along with traditional oral and written discourse modes, is realized through numerous other media or modes – live-streaming and online text messaging as well as pictures, graphic designs, cartoons, colors, music, clothing, theatre-like scenes/actions, etc. The collection of these modes or elements, contributes to how multimodality affects different rhetorical situations, or opportunities for increasing the audience’s reception of an idea or concept. Hence, the present paper aims at outlining the different modes of multidisciplinary communication tactics with a focus on the complex nature of language/discourse/text and other multimodal communication practices in terms of the aural, spatial and visual resources or modes used to compose the message of the 2018 Armenian Velvet Revolution. The case study shows that the Armenian Velvet Revolution is a master-class in the application of multimodality, i.e. various modes of communication to convey information and impact the public, thus securing the success of the Revolution
Abstract Communication is a social phenomenon based on sharing information, ideas and attitudes. Maturity, experience, personal and social relationships that run more smoothly and become more meaningful, are developed, expanded and advanced through communication. Hence, the purpose of this paper based on case study methodology is to help students understand the principles of communication theory/study and put them into practice in life. The skills and techniques learned in the course are essential to effective communication in intrapersonal, interpersonal, small-group and public speaking and can be applied not only through studying the theoretical material but also through practical exercises, discussions and presentations that will enable to incorporate them into daily life and activity. As a result, students will learn to function in a more productive and assertive way in public and work environments and develop the newfound abilities to speak up effectively in other contexts.
Gaiane MuradianAssociate Professor, The theoretical background of cyberpunk literature would be void without the actual analysis of extrapolation and metaphor in William Gibson's (the forerunner of cyberpunk subgenre) Neuromancer (1984). Despite being examined as a product of both imaginative and cognitive worlds, the metaphor cannot thoroughly express the actual reality. The latter aim is realized through extrapolation which can be described as a scientifically oriented cognitive estrangement, rational imagination capable of making predictions which have a reasonable chance to become reality. Thus, extrapolation deals with how to construct metaphor on truth and helps to draw the borderline between the scientifically oriented truth and the imaginary truth. The delimitation of the given borderline contributes to knowing and recognizing the original language and style, the cognitive and imaginative maps of cyberpunk literature. It is the cyberspace and its characterizations of matrix, simstim, memory, Microsoft(s), DNA that represent the main components and sources of extrapolation for the imaginary urban space examined quite closely in Neuromancer. The infiniteness of Cyberspace reflects the probability of those futuristic and trajectory settings which are the main "inhabitants" of Gibson's cyberpunk. The settings are extrapolated and transmitted to the realm of metaphoric chains in which extrapolation functions as a unique type of cyberpunk metaphor.
