Introdução O coelho (Oryctolagus cuniculus) foi uma das primeiras espécies utilizadas na experimentação biológica, sendo utilizado em pesquisas laboratoriais, principalmente em estudos de bacteriologia, fisiologia e nutrição; e ainda, em laboratórios clínicos, estudos sobre hormônios e para a produção de vacinas e soros (ALMEIDA & LEITE, 2012). Atualmente o coelho é considerado um animal economicamente importante por ser utilizado pela indústria na produção de carne, pele, couro, vacina e soro. Além de fornecer adubo orgânico, que possui um alto valor no mercado, utiliza também o cérebro, que pode ser desidratado e moído para obtenção de tromboplastina, um agente coagulador do sangue (FERNANDES et al., 2013). Os coelhos são bem utilizados como animais de companhia, provavelmente por ser uma espécie dócil, visualmente agradável e de fácil manejo alimentar (MELO et al., 2008). Além de ser amplamente utilizado em zooterapia, pois acelera a recuperação de humanos hospitalizados ou portadores de doenças crônicas (SAMFIRA & PETROMAN, 2011).
