A difusão mundial do conceito de sustentabilidade predeterminou a criação de um consumidor mais comprometido com a preservação do meio ambiente, e nesse sentido, as empresas possuem o desafio contemporâneo de se adequarem às exigências dos seus stakeholders (clientes, fornecedores, colaboradores, investidores etc.) suprindo suas necessidades através da apresentação fidedigna de suas ações no contexto ambiental, dentre outros. O Balanço Social é um importante instrumento de divulgação dessas ações. Assim, este estudo objetivou analisar se as informações contábeis ambientais divulgadas pelas empresas brasileiras do setor de utilidade pública, cadastradas na BOVESPA, em seus Balanços Sociais, estão aderentes às exigências da Norma Brasileira de Contabilidade – NBCT 15. Para tanto, realizou-se pesquisa documental, de levantamento, descritiva e quantitativa. Com o intuito de atingir a finalidade proposta, analisou-se o Balanço Social do exercício de 2007 de uma amostra de 42 empresas de um universo de 61. Constatou-se que a média percentual de aderência sobre os itens de investimentos e alocação de recursos de cunho ambiental representou o item de maior evidenciação, com 95% de adesão, enquanto que a média percentual de aderência sobre os itens referentes ao envolvimento das empresas com processos, indenizações multas e passivos ambientais foi de 12%. Adicionalmente, o subsetor de Energia Elétrica apresentou maior divulgação quanto aos investimentos ambientais, já o subsetor de Água e Saneamento propiciou maior divulgação de aspectos relacionados a processos, indenizações multas e passivos ambientais. Do exposto, conclui-se que as informações contábeis ambientais divulgadas pelas empresas de utilidade pública cadastradas na BOVESPA, em seus Balanços Sociais, apresentam aderência parcial às exigências da NBC-T 15, em que apenas 32% em média das empresas estudadas evidenciam as informações solicitadas por esta norma, enquanto 68% das empresas não as divulgam, seja por não se enquadrarem na situação específica ou em virtude de omissão.
