Az utóbbi néhány év világgazdasági történései a magyar szakemberek figyelmét is a globalizáció folyamatai felé fordították. A globalizáció esetén legtöbbször azonban csak annak gazdasági oldalairól beszélünk, miközben nem, vagy alig ejtünk szót a társadalmi, a politikai és a kulturális hatásokról. Ezért ebben a tanulmányban a globalizáció konkrét térségi társadalmi és gazdasági hatásainak feltárására vállalkozunk. Egy székesfehérvári empirikus kutatás eredményei alapján – és természetesen számos egyéb, hasonló típusú konkrét vizsgálat által feltártak szerint – kísérletet teszünk a globalizáció helyi folyamatainak elfogulatlan elemzésére, a térség fejlődése szempontjából kedvező és kedvezőtlen következmények tisztázására.
Az 1990-es évek Magyarországán végbement gyors társadalmi-gazdasági változások következtében a területi egyenlőtlenségek jelentősen átstrukturálódtak. A folyamat különböző területeket más és más mértékben érintett. Az átalakulás egészét tekintve az átlagosnál kedvezőbb változásokat mondhat magáénak a Közép-dunántúli régió. Az összességében kedvező összetételű tényezők mellett azonban kisebb térségekben, belső és külső perifériákon a területi egyenlőtlenségek hosszabb távú stabilizálódása, bizonyos területeken pedig felerősödése várható. A régió dinamizmusának megtartása érdekében polarizáltabb fejlődés, a kialakult területi egyenlőtlenségek kezelése szükséges, egyrészt a versenyképesség egyes területeken történő javításával, másrészt az elmaradt területek további felzárkóztatásával.
A tanulmány a külföldi működőtőke befektetések nemzetközi és hazai trendjeinek áttekintésével, az új trendek regionális dimenzióinak bemutatásával értelmezi az új gazdasági szereplők telephely-választási stratégiáit, a Közép-dunántúli térségbe települt multinacionális vállalatok jövőbeni terveit, és két városi mintaterület, Székesfehérvár és Tatabánya példáján összegzi a különböző adottságú területek eltérő fejlődési pályáinak sajátosságait.
