Picturebook, materiality, book design, medium, Russian FormalismPicturebooks are notable for their profusion in formal qualities and modes of expression. Nevertheless, these books are recurringly aimed at infant audiences due to conventional ways to articulate text and image. By discussing the edition of Herman Melville's Bartleby, o escrivão designed by Elaine Ramos, we argue that this is a picturebook because it articulates this medium's parameters to provide another reading experience. On the other hand, it expands conventional conceptions of the picturebook due to the way it articulate its devices, mainly in its materiality. Hence we demonstrate how this edition disobeys those conventions and disrupts the category of picturebooks, not unlike Melville's novel did with 19 th century literature. This implies the expansion of this category and new possibilities of articulating its parameters.
After reviewing the literature, we proposed four categories to organize definitions of information design, each of which highlights fundamental principles for the practice. We found that information design defines itself as an activity of mediation per excellence, looking forward to ultimately become a transparent treatment of the data towards the user. By relating design theory to its history, we argue that this epistemological view comes from a modern worldview and unfolds as aesthetic choices that are not recognized as such – a paradigm that critical post-modernism form Cranbrook school argued against. At last, using concepts from Vilém Flusser we argue that form in design is not just about stylistic choices, but reflects models that structure reality, finally providing epistemological alternatives for the practice.
Concluímos que o contexto contemporâneo requer uma mudança de paradigmas teóricos. book design, form of the book, materialityThis paper contrasts through a literature review canonical book design paradigm with probabilistic materiality's approach in order to propose an alternative mode of conceiving the form of the book and the craft of book design. After presenting the canon as put forth by Jan Tschichold, we present probabilistic materiality (Drucker, 2009) and outline consequences to book designing. Finally, we argue that our contemporary context requires a shift in theoretical paradigms.
