The term periodontitis encompasses several polymicrobial infectious diseases, of multifactorial etiology, with chronic and aggressive forms. In spite of the etiopathogenic differences between these two forms of the disease, few studies have analyzed the subgingival colonization by yeast. The objective of this investigation was to analyze the composition of the yeast microbiota present in the mucosa and subgingival sites of healthy individuals and patients with aggressive and chronic periodontitis. For this, samples were recovered from these two locations and the yeast recovered identified by phenotypic and genotypic methods. Patients with chronic periodontitis showed significant differences in relation to the other groups with respect to carrier status (69.2% versus 35.7% of healthy individuals; [chi(i)(2) test; p=0.014]), the total number of isolated colony forming units or CFU (mean and ranges 281.6 (0-6048) [K-W(2)=6.998; p=0.03]), the Simpson diversity index (I) in site b (I(b)=0.344 versus healthy subjet and aggresive periodontitis where I=0 [multiple t-test comparisons with the Bonferronni correction, p<0.05]), and the species profile. Interestingly, in spite of the varied profiles of the species present in the mucosa of the three groups analyzed we noted that only C. albicans and C. dubliniensis were capable of colonizing the periodontal pockets in patients with chronic periodontitis, while only C. albicans was identified in the subgingiva of healthy individuals and patients with aggressive periodontitis.

Chitosan is a natural polymer derived from chitin, a structural component of fungi, insects and shrimp, which exerts antimicrobial effects against bacteria and fungi. The aim of this study was to investigate the in vitro antifungal activity of low molecular weight chitosan (LMWC), and the potential synergy between chitosan and a currently used antifungal drug, fluconazole. The in vitro minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of chitosan and fluconazole against 105 clinical Candida isolates were measured by the broth microdilution method. LMWC exhibited a significant antifungal activity, inhibiting over 89.9% of the clinical isolates examined (68.6% of which was completely inhibited). The species included several fluconazole-resistant strains and less susceptible species such as C. glabrata, which was inhibited at a concentration of 4.8 mg/l LMWC. Although some strains were susceptible at pH 7.0, a greater antifungal activity of LMWC was observed at pH 4.0. There was no evidence of a synergistic effect of the combination of LMWC and fluconazole at pH 7.0. This is the first report in which the antifungal activity of LMWC was investigated with clinical Candida strains. The use of LMWC as an antifungal compound opens new therapeutic perspectives, as the low toxicity of LMWC in humans supports its use in new applications in an environment of pH 4.0-4.5, such as a topical agent for vulvovaginal candidiasis.

This paper presents a parametric study of classical additive 3D-printing settings for use on conductive filaments in applications for high-frequency topologies. First, a wideband characterization was conducted, printing a microstrip transmission line using a conductive filament with variations of typical 3D-printing settings, such as layer height, infill percentage, and infill pattern. The measurement results show a dependence on the high-frequency transmission parameters with respect to the infill percentage and the infill pattern. Finally, two antennas were 3D-printed using conductive material, a microstrip patch, and a low-weight pyramidal horn antenna. The results for the patch agree with the losses found on the line measurements, while the low-weight pyramidal horn exhibits no major differences compared with its equivalent antenna, made using perfect conductors.INDEX TERMS 3D-printing, wideband characterization, 3D-printed antennas, conductive PLA.

This article presents the design, construction, and evaluation of an easy-to-build textile pressure resistive sensor created from low-cost conventional anti-static sheets and conductive woven fabrics. The sensor can be built quickly using standard household tools, and its thinness makes it especially suitable for wearable applications. Five sensors constructed under such conditions were evaluated, presenting a stable and linear characteristic in the range 1 to 70 kPa. The linear response was modeled and fitted for each sensor individually for comparison purposes, confirming a low variability due to the simple manufacturing process. Besides, the recovery times of the sensors were measured for pressures in the linear range, observing, for example, an average time of 1 s between the moment in which a pressure of 8 kPa was no longer applied, and the resistance variation at the 90% of its nominal value. Finally, we evaluated the proposed sensor design on a classroom application consisting of a smart glove that measured the pressure applied by each finger. From the evaluated characteristics, we concluded that the proposed design is suitable for didactic, healthcare and lifestyle applications in which the sensing of pressure variations, e.g., for activity assessment, is more valuable than accurate pressure sensing.

Rotavirus vaccines are well tolerated and provide adequate protection against moderate to severe disease in high, middle and low-income regions. Partnerships between governments, industry, and funding agencies will now be urgently needed to promote vaccine use, especially in the less privileged countries of the world.

In this paper a robust system for enabling robots to detect and identify humans in domestic environments is proposed. Robust human detection is achieved through the use of thermal and visual information sources that are integrated to detect human-candidate objects, which are further processed in order to verify the presence of humans and their identity using face information in the thermal and visual spectrums. Face detection is used to verify the presence of humans, and face recognition to identify them. Active vision mechanisms are employed in order to improve the relative pose of a candidate object/person in case direct identification is not possible. The response of the different modules is characterized, and the proposed system is validated using image databases of real domestic environments, and human detection and identification benchmarks of the RoboCup@Home research community.FONDECYT-Chile 109025

Noroviruses are a significant cause of moderate to severe endemic ADE in Chilean children. Although significantly less severe than rotavirus as a group, most norovirus episodes were moderate to severe clinically. An effective norovirus vaccine would be of significant additional benefit to the current rotavirus vaccine in decreasing disease burden associated with ADE.
