El presente artículo estudia la formación de nuevos grupos de élite en Irapuato, de 1840 a 1888, periodo en el que la región fue parte de una lenta transformación debido a que el crecimiento demográfico fue gradual, y las operaciones crediticias que estaban a cargo de la Iglesia se debilitaron por las guerras de independencia y la Ley de Desamortización de Fincas Rústicas y Urbanas. En este escenario, los créditos pasaron a manos de un grupo minoritario de españoles ampuerenses que emigraron entre los decenios cuarenta y cincuenta del siglo decimonónico a tierras del Bajío y que, posteriormente, se establecieron en Irapuato y se unieron en lazo familiar con vecinos adinerados.
