Possible genetical and immunochemical pathways in the MNSsUu blood
group system are discussed. The importance of a common precursor substance,
which is modified by the MN, then by the Uu and finally by the Ss genes, is emphasized.
The dominant role which N-acetyl-neuraminic acid plays in the biosynthesis
of several blood group and myxovirus receptors of human and animal
origin is discussed.
