Acquired tracheo-oesophageal fistulae are uncommon in the paediatric age group. A case of such a fistula secondary to impaction of a button battery is reported below. Prompt management is essential to reduce morbidity and mortality in these cases.
fenestration and segmentectomy(2). 4 patients treated for puncture and sclerosis (average stay 5.7 days), 1 patient managed conservatively. Morbidity: 2 patients operated via laparotomy, Clavien I (2) and Clavien II (2). Only one punctured patient with pain in the puncture site. Follow-up: complete resolutions on surgically treated patients, sclerotherapy: 2 partial remissions and 2 complete resolutions. Conclusions: In symptomatic patients, percutaneous sclerosis has a minimal morbidity and mortality, but high relapse. Fenestration has low relapse and minimal morbidity. Surgical treatment usually by laparoscopy is the best approach, offering shorter stay and fewer complications, although safer in urgent circumstances, on nonurgent patients it increases average stay and morbidity.
