ChemInform Abstract The hcp phase of Mo2C has been prepared by carburization of Mo and is shown to have a BET surface area of 10-30 m2/g, and pores 30å in diameter. The fcc phase of Mo2N, obtained by NH3 reduction of MoO3, has a high degree of crystallinity, a BET surface area of about 180 m2/g and pores of about 17å in diameter. The fcc phase of Mo2C is produced by exposing the nitride to a CH4/H2 mixtureresulting in a substitution of C for N without major changes in the BET area or pore size. Both the carbide phases contain free carbon that cannot be removed without removal of lattice carbon. Near-surface oxygen can be eliminated by thermal pretreatment in CH4/H2 mixtures. The changes in composition of Mo2C and Mo2N occurring during their use for CO hydrogenation and ethanol hydrogenolysis are also described.
