Valencia orange trees [Citrus sinensis (L.) Osb.], budded on sour orange (C. aurantium) rootstock, were sprayed with four different potassium salts during 1995 and 1996. Twenty 5-year-old trees were sprayed once per month with one of the following material. K0: distilled water, K1: potassium green (a compound of different potassium salts, 35% K2O), K2: potassium nitrate (35% K2O), K3: potassium citrate (35% K2O), or K4: potassium sulfate (51% K2O). The vegetative growth occurred in three distinct successive cycles, i.e., spring, summer, and autumn. These cycles differed in time of commencement, duration and termination with respect to season. All potassium treatments significantly increased the shoot length and number of leaves/shoot for the three growth cycles. However, potassium green was superior overall other treatments. Percentage of leaf miner infestation was reduced at all potassium treatments. Potassium applications significantly increased leaf contents of N, P, K and decreased Ca and Mg levels.
The modifying effect of growth regulators on bud burst, flower bud formation and sex expression in olives varies greatly according to cultivar, concentration and time of application. Cycocel 200, 500 mg/l, ethephon 200 mg/l and SADH 2000 mg/l stimulated bud burst and flower bud formation in the 'Blanquetta' cv. A noticeable increase in the percentage of perfect flowers was obtained by 100 mg/l of kinetin, and 200 mg/l of Cycocel in the cv. 'Picual', Ethephon 200/1, Cycocel 200 mg/l and SADH 2000 mg/l considerably increased the percentage of perfect flowers in the cvs 'Blanquetta', 'Serrana' and 'Picual'. Treatments at green cluster stage were not effective
Two main categories of olive flowers were characterized. The first by presence of normal gynoecium and the other by the presence of rudimentary gynoecium. Complete flowers differed in shape of ovaries, style length, shape of stigma and density of hairs covering the stigma. Three types of aborted flowers were observed. The first type could be detected by lack of ovule integuments. The second by undevelopment of the style, outer tissues of the ovary and of the ovules, while the third comprised flowers of completely undeveloped female organs. No correlation existed between pistil abortion and the viability of pollen grains. Four groups of pollen grains regarding their stainability and three groups according to their shape were detected
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
