The heats of combustion of the gaseous alkanes, C1 to C4, have been measured at 25°C and 1 atm pressure using a flame calorimeter. AH:(methane, g) = -890.71 k 0.38 kJ mol-l AH,"(ethane, g) = -1560.69 k 0.25 kJ mol-l AH;(propane, g) = -2219.17f 0.46 kJ mo1-l AH;(n-butane, g) = -2877.54+ 0.63 kJ mol-l AH,"(2-methylpropane, g) = -2869.00& 0.59 kJ mol-'The derived heats of formation differ slightly from the previously accepted values as reported in the America1 Petroleum Institute Research Project 44 Tables, and are in better accord with the requirements of the Allen bond-energy scheme.
The heats of combustion of the following cyclic ethers have been measured in the gaseous state AH,"(ethylene oxide, 9) = -312.15f0.14 kcal mole-1 4H,"(trimethylene oxide, g) = -467*85+0.14 kcal mole -1AHc(tetrahydrofuran, g) = -605.44&0-16 kcal mole-1 AH;(tetrahydropyran, 9) = -758.44 10.23 kcal mole-1 at 25°C and 1 atm pressure in a flame calorimeter :These results were used to derive the heats of formation of each of the cyclic ethers. By application of the Allen bond energy scheme the strain energies in these ethers have been calculated and compared with the strain energies in other small ring compounds.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
