EVALUATING a solvent for use in an extraction operation, it is of prime importance to know the distribution of the material being extracted between the solvent and raffinate phases. Both the quantity of solvent and the number of extraction stages required to obtain the desired separation depend on the value of the distribution coefficient. A previous paper (8) correlated the distribution coefficients of a large number of compounds between two solvents in terms of the chemical structure of the solute. In the work described here the variation of the distribution coefficient with solute concentration, in certain ternary systems, is explained fundamentally bn the basis of the activity coefficient
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
