Abstract:In this work, we present experimental data demonstrating the possibility of using magnonic holographic devices for pattern recognition. The prototype eight-terminal device consists of a magnetic matrix with micro-antennas placed on the periphery of the matrix to excite and detect spin waves. The principle of operation is based on the effect of spin wave interference, which is similar to the operation of optical holographic devices. Input information is encoded in the phases of the spin waves generated on the several edges of the magnonic matrix, while the output corresponds to the amplitude of the inductive voltage produced by the interfering spin waves on the other side of the matrix. The level of the output voltage depends on the combination of the input phases as well as on the internal structure of the magnonic matrix. Experimental data collected for several magnonic matrixes show the unique output signatures in which maxima and minima correspond to specific input phase patterns. Potentially, magnonic holographic devices may provide a higher storage density compare to the optical counterparts due to a shorter wavelength and compatibility with conventional electronic devices. The challenges and shortcoming of the magnonic holographic devices are also discussed.

We describe a magnetic field sensor based on a spin wave interferometer. Its sensing element consists of a magnetic cross junction with four micro-antennas fabricated at the edges. Two of these antennas are used for spin wave excitation while two other antennas are used for detection of the inductive voltage produced by the interfering spin waves. Two waves propagating in the orthogonal arms of the cross may accumulate significantly different phase shifts depending on the magnitude and direction of the external magnetic field. This phenomenon is utilized for magnetic field sensing. The sensitivity attains its maximum under the destructive interference condition, where a small change in the external magnetic field results in a drastic increase of the inductive voltage, as well as in the change of the output phase. We report experimental data obtained for a micrometer scale Y3Fe2(FeO4)3 cross structure. The change of the inductive voltage near the destructive interference point exceeds 40 dB per 1 Oe. The phase of the output signal exhibits a π-phase shift within 1 Oe. The data are collected at room temperature. Taking into account the low thermal noise in ferrite structures, we estimate that the maximum sensitivity of the spin wave magnetometer may exceed attotesla.

Abstract:We investigated a possible use of the magnonic interferometric switches in multi-valued logic circuits. The switch is a three-terminal device consisting of two spin channels where input, control, and output signals are spin waves. Signal modulation is achieved via the interference between the source and gate spin waves. We report experimental data on a micrometer scale prototype based on Y 3 Fe 2 (FeO 4 ) 3 structure. The output characteristics are measured at different angles of the bias magnetic field. The On/Off ratio of the prototype exceeds 36 dB at room temperature. Experimental data is complemented by the theoretical analysis and the results of micro magnetic simulations showing spin wave propagation in a micrometer size magnetic junction. We also present the results of numerical modeling illustrating the operation of a nanometersize switch consisting of just 20 spins in the source-drain channel. The utilization of spin wave interference as a switching mechanism makes it possible to build nanometerscale logic gates, and minimize energy per operation, which is limited only by the noise margin. The utilization of phase in addition to amplitude for information encoding offers an innovative route towards multi-state logic circuits. We describe possible implementation of the three-value logic circuits based on the magnonic interferometric switches. The advantages and shortcomings inherent in interferometric switches are also discussed.2

The focusing effect for spin waves excited by a curved micrometer-sized coplanar waveguide transducer on top of a 5-μm-thick epitaxial yttrium iron garnet film is studied by means of the micro-focused Mandelstam-Brillouin light scattering technique and micromagnetic simulations. The curvilinear transducer is designed to focus the backward volume spin waves on the in-plane bias magnetic field applied along the symmetry axis of the transducer. We show that two-dimensional maps of spin wave intensity exhibit nonreciprocal properties without mirror symmetry with respect to the magnetic field direction and the focusing effect. The observed effects are the consequence of nonreciprocity of the backward volume spin waves travelling at an angle toward the bias field direction.

We report on the experimental observation of short, exchange-dominated spin waves (EDSW) generation by a thickness step in the ferrite waveguide under microwave pumping. This effect was explored both experimentally (using mirco-Brillouin light scattering technique) and theoretically (by micromagnetic simulation) for the sample magnetized along the step and for two cases of pumping: a uniform microwave pumping of the step and its pumping through a magnetostatic surface wave (MSSW) traveling across the step. It was shown that efficiency of EDSW generation caused by MSSW scattering on the thickness step increases with the frequency (or wave number) while for the case of the uniform pumping, the generation efficiency demonstrates the opposite behavior.
