Abstract:The objective of this research was to analyze the impact of multiple sclerosis on the function of the stomatognathic system. 16 individuals have been selected: multiple sclerosis group (MSG-n=8) and control group (CG-n=8). These were submitted to the electromyographic assessment, efficiency and thickness of the temporal, masseter and sternocleidomastoid muscles bilaterally, as well as maximum molar bite force. The electromyography results demonstrated for the MSG that the temporal muscle presented a smaller average activity in the postural conditions of the jaw and masticatory cycle efficiency, already the masseter muscle only during the masticatory cycle efficiency. In the analysis of muscle thickness only sternocleidomastoid muscles showed lower average thickness and in the analysis of bite force the MSG presented a higher force average. It is concluded that multiple sclerosis negatively influence the functions of the stomatognathic system. Keywords: Stomatognathic system, Multiple sclerosis, Masticatory efficiency.
